I think it's more winter months for me, honestly. NY gets it pretty cold. I love warm weather and being able to go out and do things. Typically, depending on the weather during winter, we can't go out and do much. Fall is one of my favorites, though. I love fall activities (apple picking, photography, etc.).

If fall is hard for you, I suggest you try to have fun. I think it's normal for people to go through these different depression phases in different seasons. Maybe go apple picking, do something on Halloween, go on a nature walk, go out with friends/family.

My friends and I did a photoshoot one year during fall before winter came and it's one of my favorite memories. :)

We do have an orchard nearby. Everyone has such good ideas. I think I need to rename the thread now though. Its winter I dread coming. I suffer from chronic pain and winter makes it worse. So I think thats why I hate cold weather so much.I like to see the leaves change but I know winter is only a couple months away so I start feeling down when I see falling leaves.

You know as a kid I always loved the sunny warm and hot season and weather but as I came of age now I prefer fall and winter for more than one reason. Firstly fall weather is cloudy a lot and the skies are grey, I have a cheerful personally and yet I am most comfortable and seem to connect to those dark and cloudy not to cold not to hot seasons and I love winter because it's cold and I am very hot natured just being in my room I have to have powerful fans blowing on me when I sleep if I don't have those powerful fans blowing on me then if I use anything but a sheet or an extremely think blanket I wake up drenched in sweat

not to mention Christmas season. I could care less about the presents or santa or the candy and such but when this december comes around IO can feel the Christmas spirit in the air

Fall is my favorite season. Of course, living in Florida there is not much to experience except perhaps slightly cooler temps with lower humidity. I have lived in Michigan for 27 years and 8 years in Maine and the changing of the leaves is usually brilliant and the air is crisp. I have lived 3 years in Tennessee also and that state has decent fall foliage. I don't find autumn the least bit depressing.

I HATE WINTER!!!

(Hubby would chuckle if he hear me. I usually say that at least once a week in winter.)

So I try to see the bright side:

1. I don't have to water the garden every day in winter.

2. No mosquitoes.

3. Some of my plants are succulents or tender perennials that have to come in, so I still have a garden in winter. AND, I don't have to get out my jammies to water it.

4. I don't have to weed the garden much. (A wayward weed does sneak in on occasion, but once plucked, more don't come.)

5. I like watching the changing colors all year long on trees. Sure, you're thinking autumn colors. Well, that's not the only time they change. Many of the green changes throughout the growing season. First bright green, then darker and darker. Sometime in the end of July to beginning of August (at least here in growing zone 6 -- mid-Atlantic states, if you're not a gardener, but the zones go clear across the world, no just the eastern seaboard states), it's the darkest, as if they're saying "YAY! The world is just right!", but then they lighten up a tad bit. Not brighter. More paler, like they're hinting even before the weather changes that something has changed. And then which trees go first, and which trees turn which colors. Like we have buttonwoods/sycamores. Love the bark! Hate the leaves. I hate the leaves because they die first. And they don't even bother turning pretty before dying. They just go brown and fall off way before all the other trees even think about changing colors. BUT then we have ginkgoes. If you've ever been near a female ginkgo tree, you'd know why we hate them. If you've ever taken the supplement Ginkgo, I bet you'd stop if you ever smelled the fruit of the tree. Smells like dog poop -- the kind right after a meal of beans. And, if you step on one, the smell travels with you, right into your house whether you wiped it off or not! BUT, it all is worth it, because the ginkgo is about the last tree to loose its leaves, and before they lose them they turn yellow. Not dull yellow. Not banana yellow, not mellow yellow, not gold. Honest to goodness Crayola Yellow! Beautiful especially in the evening, because it feels like all the rays of the sun soak into those leaves to give off a lovely shine that seems to last past when the sun sets. AND, did you know in VA, you aren't likely to ever see red leaves on trees in the forest? (You can see red on ornamental trees, but those are the types of trees that are red-leafed all summer too.) Why? No maple trees. My uncle's wife (technically my aunt, but it feels funny calling her aunt, since she's hubby's age and she didn't marry my uncle until they were in their 40's) makes him take her north some autumns, simply because she wants to see red in the trees.

6. I make desserts all year long. Every spring, I'm dying for fresh strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, and peaches! (In that order too, because that's how the crops come in. lol) Fresh! Not frozen. And local, because they don't taste quite as fresh as the ones shipped here on barges. And I try to make make as many desserts as possible with those ingredients. And then something happens in September. BORING! Then I remember the other side. Cranberries are being picked soon. Pumpkins! Whoa! I miss pumpkin-cranberry muffins. And apples! Sure you can get apples all year now, but the new crop is coming in right about now, and it's subtly better than last year's. Less likely to be soggy or brown in the middle, bigger explosion of tastes, more varieties all just right for certain occasions. Apple brown betty -- a winter dessert! And, because I'm busy all summer keeping up with what's coming in now, I don't make banana nut muffins. I miss banana nut muffins. So I like the variety in seasons.

7. I HATE WINTER! Winter is only four months a year. We're not going into winter now. We're going into autumn. Let's not rush things. Don't you miss your winter clothes? Aren't you tired of your summer clothes? And how about the autumn and spring clothes?

8. No winter, no spring. Spring is the season I look forward to -- brimming with potential. (I figure if you love summer you know that feeling.) How much would we miss that feeling minus suffering through winter?

9. CHRISTMAS! I get to decorate all I want without hubby thinking I'm nuts(ier.) I get to see decorations I don't have room for in summer. (Can't keep the Christmas decorations out or no room for flower bouquets. lol)

10. Winter gives me time to hibernate. I'd like to clean out the front porch, but it's too hot to do in the summer. I'd rather be out in the garden then clean the basement. I have 1001 excuses to avoid big projects in the house. Come winter, I finally have the time.

I hate being cold, but cold is four out of 12 months.

Thank you those are great ideas also! Does writing on CC count?! lol I do like taking photos,as you can see,I was thinking I should blow them up and put them on the wall.Maybe that would be cheery, depending on the cost to do it.lol
I think CC is good. Yes.

That's a great idea about pictures.

It's hard for me to say what to do. I live in So. Cal. Cloudy days are broken up by sunny days. Our weather is cold around December, January, February. But I love the cold weather. When gray clouds arrive we love it. A break from the sun.

Can you take your pictures and burn them on a dvd and then have show them on your TV. Just let them cycle through.

Change your furniture around.

Do spring cleaning!

But definitely have a place where there's a notable, colorful plant, and probably a fake one. Put it where you can see it through the day.

Ok this made me lol more then once.Thank you, it cheered me up! We have something in common we love to bake!! But hubby says he gains too much weight so I have to keep it around holiday time. I need other people to bake for.lol I like to decorate for every season, the change just makes me happy. But Im going to need a shed to store it all soon. I do think that stores rushing the seasons bothers me. In Aug.they had Christmas decorations out already. I want to have time to enjoy the seasons. It annoys me so much! Thanks for the post, full of a lot of good thoughts.

I used to have a lot of trouble with winter blues, also known as SAD, Seasonal Affective Disorder. It has to do with the amount of light you are exposed to on a daily basis. The shorter winter days provide less light. I got over it, I think, mostly because I had an outside job all year around for many years. This year may be different because I moved north, the days will be even shorter, and I will be working indoors most of the time. In the past I used a light panel early in the morning to expose myself to more light. It does help. Try to get out into the sun as much as you can. Also taking vitamin D helps. People who really have a serious problem in this area get so depressed in the winter they can't even get out of bed and go to work.

Thanks for that advice. Im not so bad that I stay in bed. Its just having chronic pain, the cold makes it worse. So I think that also contributes to the winter blues.

FALL DEPRESSION

It's really bad when you fall.
And if you get hurt, or just feel really embarrassed, it's easy to get depressed.
Don't get depressed!
Try to get up!
Most people fall because they aren't wearing good shoes.
Did your shoes have proper arch support?
Was the tread worn down too far on the edges?
The edge of the shoe is the part where you usually lose your grip and fall.
Lots of people fall when the edge of their tread is worn down.
It's very common!
Don't be depressed!

All these things can be fixed!
Just take a good look at those shoes, and say to yourself,
"I'm not going back out till I'm wearing proper shoes!"
Then got to a good shoe store, and take care of that problem!
Make the man at the counter show you shoes with all the best tread!
Take charge of your life!

Lots of people fall.
Don't let it get you down.
Get some better shoes and get rid of that depression!

great POEM about shoe depression, Max,

wish I'd know about 'shoes' earlier in my life, especially the tread-edges -
would have saved me a lot of falls not to mention depression!

Thank you my court jester! That was a hoot! Now how much to you charge an hour? And I'll be needing you all winter so clear your schedule.
