"Abstemious" simply means somebody who exercises discipline or self-control to avoid unnecessary excess, as in discipline in over eating, restrain in alcohol consumption, moderation in playing sports, etc.
In other words, someone who makes good use of moderation for the sake of avoiding over-doing something.
