Anyone in here have any experience in buying raw fruits and vegetables and know any methods to preserve them to make them last as long as they can?

Do you have any experience with or have any favorite recipes when it comes to raw fruits and vegetables?

Hi blueO, did u find what u were looking for? I have been searching on these too, and esp because we are a warm country, the more they last w/o articifial preservatives, the better. We do have some dried fruits here like mangoes, papaya, jackfruit, also durian candies from the south esp. I wish i had more and could preserve more aside from the usual jams, but i know there are lots of these dried stuff from nearby countries like vietnam etc. wc i have sampled and wish we also had here.

As for vegs, what i know are kimchee, altho i cannot eat much of that either. If i remember right it was jkalyna who had a thread on fermented food. Did u see that?

Vitamin E oil is a way to preserve them. Rub the Vit E on the food. But it is not really all that practical with large quantities of food due to the cost. It is also a great way to help keep oils like Olive Oil fresher longer. Just pour a drop or two in the jar.
Fred Van Liew sells energy mugs, which helps make the food last longer, by maybe 20%.
Also Zero Point Global sells vibrational discs. Put them in the fridge near your food, and you'll get maybe a 20% to 25% extended shelf life.
 
A couple of things I do to preserve celery, grapes, carrots, cabbage and lettuce. For celery I wrap the bunch in aluminum foil. It won't last forever, but does do OK for a couple of weeks. For grapes and carrots, I keep them in plastic bags in the frig with a paper towel inside the bags and change them out every other day until they no longer get real damp. Once again they will last about two weeks. The grapes are real picky about how damp they get and will mold or rot with a drop of water, almost. Cabbage seems to keep better in the fridge if I keep it in a plastic bag by itself. I have an old tupperware lettuce keeper for the lettuce, but sometimes it works better if I ad a paper towel, if there gets to be too much moisture in the container. A plastic bag may also work. I keep potatoes in a paper bag in a small pantry and sprout them if they last long enough to grow any sprouts over a half inch long. I never tried anything for tomatoes. They don't last that long.
 
It is also better to use a paper towel, or a small regular towel washed with a organic chem free detergent might be even better, because it forms a barrier between the food and plastic. The plastic will leech dangerous chemicals over time that will get into the food. In fact a study has shown that there is a chemical in commercial use plastic that lowers testosterone levels in men.
 
I'll take your word for that Joseph. You seem to be a font of knowledge and I had only heard that the plastic leached a particular chemical when it got quite warm. Do you think refrigerated plastic will still leach?
 
By the way does anyone know why we are not supposed to put bananas in the frig? I have been and other than the skin turning black relatively quickly, I haven't noticed a taste change. I haven't split any bunches to see which way they keep longer, but I think it is time to find out. If I can remember where I posted this I will let you know how it turns out.

when our bananas are getting really ripe, we peel and put a few in the freezer -
when we're ready for some fruit-ice-cream, we mix them with other fresh fruits
and put them in the blender - really delicious and healthy...

Refrigerated will slow down the process, but not stop it. It also depends what types of foods are in the plastic, as some tend to react the gases more then others.

Bananas generally should not be refrigerated. In fact, most people don't do it, myself included, but tomato's should not be either.

And speaking of healthy foods, the moringa is not so well known in the west, but it is a veggie eaten for centuries in asia, india esp.

Such a healthfood you can dry a few days when hot. Once i was preparing the leaves, could nt cook then however, but dried nicely in a few days not under the sun. Could still use to cook some recipes.
 
What I like to do is smoothies. half a mango, half a avocado, 1-2 bananas, Blue barries, a bit of milk and ice
 
Blue green micro algae (try it B_L), E3 Live, Wheatgrass, Spirulina, Chlorella, Goji berries, Mulberries, Macca, Carob, Dorian, Leches, Kiwis, Camu Camu, Luchema, Cactus fruit, Tomatillas, Aloe Vera plant, Lemongrass, Fennel, young Coconut water, and meat, and of course...Fratashmae of Appleday.
Eat only those for 3 weeks, and your body chemistry will undergo a dramatic change.
