Like I used to point out in my earlier posts, India is too vast a country in size and varied in demographic composition to make a sweeping generalisation of certain cultural norms and practices. In regions where muslim populations and casteism dominates, women are suppressed and oppressed unlike their Christian counterparts or for that matter as compared to the women in NE.

Personally, I have never considered myself under any 'bondage' and so, the question of regarding women's football as a liberating thing I feel is irrelevant to me.

Maybe for some, I don't know. It depends on individual. But for me, I used to play football like any other several sports that I played (volleyball, basketball, T.T, Badminton, Kabbadi, Kho-kho, board games, race, swimming, etc, etc). I enjoyed playing all these sports like I enjoyed cooking, reading, watching movies, gardening and stuffs like that, and not because it's liberating.

Ms. sanglina: Thanks for your comments; appreciated. I guess it can be said that sports, and soccer in particular, can offer opportunities for wider, social interaction.

Do you find the word or concept of becoming liberated, somewhat problematic?

I guess a lot of Christian women in various parts of the admittedly varied country of India, would not find the word or concept problematic, anyway.

Oh no! I don't mean betting in that way. It's just another way of saying which team you would FAVOR to win this year's FIFA cup?

Not only the design of the flag but I would think Argentina is quite a team to reckon with although Brazil might be the one team to go all the way to lift the Cup :)

It wouldn't surprise me if Brazil does win! :)

I do like the idea of women's soccer, and other sports, as agents of liberation in countries where there are serious restrictions, though.

Although I do agree with your point to an extent, I have my own reservations when it comes to "women liberation" especially after seeing what feminism in the name of "women liberation" is doing to the society.

Lol! For obvious reason, I never had the chance to watch any of his game live but what kind of a football fan (that too a Brazilian fan) would I be without knowing (or remembering) a legend's name like Pele? :) I would think any football fan around the globe would know (or at least heard of) legends like Maradona and Pele:)
