As someone who has never been a big Chris Tomlin fan.. I have to admit I am actually a big fan of God's Great Dance Floor, and yeah at first glance it seems very shallow and at most very light praise...but when you actually look at where the comes from it actually is somewhat deeply scripturally derived. The song derives largely from the parable of the prodigal son, in that many of us need to return to God and come back to the start, our first love for God, and in that place, we can celebrate, we can dance as David danced and we spring to life. The term God's great dance floor is simply man's little joke i guess perhaps, a little nudge at night fever. ALSO it must be noted God's Great Dance Floor is not his original track, I believe Michael W. Smith originally wrote the song, and it was in fact a worship song...Chris Tomlin took that song and made it a praise track.
Now yes, compared to perhaps Jesus Culture and Rend Collective songs, it might appear very watered down (see the pun? hope you do) and in some ways it is, but I have quite a strong dislike for songs that try to sound spiritual, hence i am not big fan of Jesus Culture, Chris Tomlin did well with How Great is Our God, Our God Is Greater and Whom Shall I Fear....aside from that I am not a big fan of his. I like simple, direct and sincere praise and worship songs, not songs wrapped up in beautiful lyrics or melodies, but simply songs from the heart, that express how amazing God is...perhaps why hymns sometimes really appeal to me.
