I have two desktops that I use for work only, in addition to four other devices. A lot of information I use to do my work is pulled from archives (which can even include very old disks), so having desktops with all of the proper drives (even the old ones) makes my life a whole lot easier.

Yahhhh??

Interesting.
How many others make use of a desktop?
Me for one and it's 8 years old. :p

No cell phone of any kind. When I get out of the house why in the world do I want to take a phone that will only annoy me in the long run.
:p

And what in the world is the rest of that stuff and what do you use it for?
:confused::confused:

Oh yeah!

I keep four vintage boxes around for nostalgia purposes. I don't do actual work with them, just old games, but they're fun to break out on occasion.

What is really frustrating is when you find programs that are extremely useful and they become incompatible with new systems. This is especially an issue when doing work for the government.

Things that make ya go grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr :D

If you're okay with running at a limited resolution, you might want to give VMware or Virtualbox a try.

You can set up any number of guest operating systems that run on whatever platform you chose (Windows8, Windows7, WinXP, Linux in 32 and 64 bit flavors). For relatively new operating systems (XP and newer) there are rudimentary 3d acceleration and USB passthrough features, so you can literally use it like a fully functional computer, all while running on whatever operating system you want.

Windows 98 will install on a virtual machine, but you'll be limited to 800x600 resolution since there will be no video drivers, and there is no USB support. You can however mount floppies of varying sizes and capacities if you copy the data off of them ahead of time and it's on your hard disk.

But it would let you run a Windows XP VM, and a Windows 98 VM, and then for the really old stuff, you can install DOS and windows 3.1 on a virtual machine as well (although I'm not sure what the status of network drivers is if you need network capabilities).

It's worthless for games because you don't get MIDI and some of the bells and whistles like 3d acceleration, but for productivity applications that need to run on an older OS, it's really convenient.

Zip drives and 3.5" floppy drives are readily available in USB. For 5.25 it's going to be harder, but there are USB controllers for them if you wanted to do some DiY.

up until only a few months ago, i had another desktop that was networked in, plus another in the corner if i needed it, all so i could access or hold onto stuff that i either needed to be able to access or regularly accessed for work.

my solution? a friend of mine built a "storage" pc (really just a big drive) and i have a few T drives for extremely high res and space-intensive creatives and former projects (not to mention being able to track/save 10+ review loops and changes for already space intensive projects).

it took me a LOOOOOOONG time to organize all that stuff, but i practically had a party when i could get rid of those dinosaurs.

I have all of my own records on about 5 drives that I carry with me (with copies in a fire safe). I never save any files that have more than entertainment value on the computer itself. Governmental agencies, due to the lack of time/money/personnel....and likely initiative, until they are forced to update...are overrun with dinosaur equipment and archives on premises. It can be unnerving, but you come across things you've never seen before in the process. Necessity is indeed the mother of invention. :)

Because it feels like a typo when you read it at first - you're thinking it should be devise, not device.

But the thread is about devices.

Well, KenThomas, neither the title of the thread nor the topic itself bother me.

What kinda bothers me are the
lentils, beans and peas mixed in the same jar. I'd be OCD separating them by now. :p

I'm more bothered by the fact that those things aren't on my diet!

I could seriously do justice to some kidney beans, or some chick peas, or sweet peas, or ...

I hear ya. I do like kidney bean soup; capers, peas in anything; I'll even taste mooseburger, but I don't like lentils. :)

I have an HP desktop that I bought new in 2009 (but it was already an older model). It actually has a single-core processor.

Also, last year I caved in and bought an 11" laptop/notebook running windows 8 (I didn't think I could ever hate an operating system so much!) because my old 2004 HP laptop finally bit the dust.

And.. I bought myself a brand new samsung galaxy tablet as a christmas present (to myself) last year.

My phone is so old. Its the type that u actually have to open to use. :p

Oh and I almost forgot.. I still have my previous desktop from like 2004. It still runs great but its windows XP and only has an 80GB hard drive lol.

I am 88, quite deaf and blind in one eye with over 50% gone in the other. All my friends are dead. Bev left last month, and Betty last week, that was the very last. Once a week I get out of the house for a bible study, and every week or two groceries are left at my front door, or I order from Amazon.

I got someone to buy me a second hand desktop when mine crashed, and I read on a Nook. I WANT!! A LAPTOP!!.

Can any one come up with a way I could justify getting one? I love my desk with my computer, I never leave the house to go anywhere. I finally found a way to get my hair cut, it has taken me two months to find a way!! Maybe I could carry the laptop along to get my hair cut, but what earthly use would it be for me? I could take the nook with all the wonderful books on it.

The title bugged me at first, and then I read what it was about. Then I thought, "clever boy! I see what you did there!"
