How do you know when God is making a specific promise to you

I wasnt sure what forum to put this under so i guess this one is as good as any lol. But how do we know that when God places something specific that Hes going to do for us on our heart? how do we know that its really him? How do we decipher between him and our own selfish desires leading away from the right path?

In my own particular situation i do feel like he has promised me something and i want to believe it so very much. It would make me SO HAPPY, But believing in this promise itself causes me to be out of my comfort zone. to believe like ive never believed before. and i want to fully trust him but i keep hearing this nagging doubt, saying maybe im imagining this or what if this was never his will and i set myself up for hurt for no reason because i was listening to flesh. please help thank you very much!

Firstly, His promises will never go against His Word. This is why we must read our Bibles and learn His Word. This would be the first test this promise must pass.

Secondly, you know His voice. If you are questioning it, I would take some time in serious prayer. Remember, prayer is a dialogue, not a monologue. Be prepared to hear from God. Take time to stop talking and wait and listen to what He would say.

Finally, seek counsel from a godly and trustworthy person, such as a pastor or church elder. And, prepare yourself to hear what they say and measure it alongside of what God says. What God says wins over others and your own desires, so be sure you have spoken with Him first.

You gave a very balanced answer to the OP. I read your signature at the bottom and wanted to ask you this. What does Titus 1:15 mean to you?

15 Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled.

promises has already been made, it's only job to have faith and believe in his word to see the outcome of our needs If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. [h=3]John 15:7[/h]

Okay, here is my thought on this...with a little background preamble. :)

I once recall reading the Scripture that states: Whatever you ask for in My name, I will grant it. (John 14:13) I wondered how that could be true. You could ask for something outside of His will...how could He then grant it? God revealed to me that this verse is referring to those that are 'sold out' for Christ. The Message translation explains it best: From now on, whatever you request along the lines of who I am and what I am doing, I'll do it.

Basically, if you're His and in the place of relationship with Him where you can ask for anything and have Him grant it, you will not ask for things outside of His will and plan and purpose or things of evil or darkness, so of course He will grant it.

I said all that to say this: When I read that Scripture you shared, I immediately thought, "Well, it's basically saying that if you're pure, you are doing things that are pure, focused on things that are pure and living a life that is pure. This isn't saying that if you're pure, immediately all dark and sinful things are pure." I looked it up in the Message Translation and here is what it said: Everything is clean to the clean-minded; nothing is clean to the dirty-minded unbelievers. They leave their dirty fingerprints on every thought and act.

So, essentially, I believe this verse is saying that the closer we get to being truly pure, the less dirty thoughts and deeds exist in us, and therefore, everything is pure that we apply our hand to. This is due to the fact that we wouldn't be seeking out the sinful and the foul and the dirty things in life, but rather the pure things, the godly things.

Do you ever notice how some people can take a perfectly innocent statement or act and turn it immediately toward sexual things? This would be one aspect of the dirty minded, foul minded person touching something and tainting it.

So, these are my thoughts on this verse after a short study...though I intend to look at it closer in the next few days, so I may be back with more. :)

Yes, just like crossnote said....when it's of God you will know. You will know with your entire being...there will be no confusion.

All the promises of God in him are all yea and amen (2 Cor 1:20). That's good news. Not one word of his good promise shall fail (1Kings 8:56). More good news. So all the promises are yea (for me) and amen (so be it unto me). God will never fail his promises to us. What this means it that the promises of God can never fail us because they are in him and because we are in Christ, our failure can never hinder the promises made to us because they do not depend upon us. Conclusion: Whatever promise we have been given and are trusting God for, God will not fail that promise and my behavior will not stop the promise from being fulfilled. ALL the promises in him are yea and amen.

The main thing for me anyway, is to waith on God. When He promises, He always provides, but maybe not in the time we might expect. Pray about this constantly until this promise is fulfilled, and then pray in praise. If there is no contradiction to His word, and if it isn't opposite of who God is, then TRUST. God bless
