SPEAKING IN TONGUES IN THE NEW TESTAMENT

JOHN A. BATTLE

Speaking in tongues is a person’s speaking aloud in a language unknown to him or her, usually as a part of religious prayer or worship. It is clear that the gift of tongues was given by God in the times of the NT. Many Christians today believe that we still should seek this supernatural gift in order to grow in Christian faith and love, and to praise God. Charismatic Christians believe this and other supernatural spiritual gifts are still operative in the church; cessationist Christians believe that these gifts ceased during NT times and are not presently exercised in the church.

A careful study of the gift of tongues in the NT will support the cessationist position.

simple.
I'm not gonna read it, because he didn't mention Pentecostals and I felt left out........ or did he accidentally put me into the charismatic group, like most uneducated internet theologians do? :rolleyes:

Hey if you want to know what is important to a pentecostal then ask one!

What's important to me as a Pentecostal? So glad you asked!!!!!

I want to feel GOD's SPIRIT reign in my life.
I want to hear HIS voice when HE talks to me.
I want to be lead by HIS power/boldness to do the things that a christian should do.
I want to see my children saved.
I want to see my parents/siblings saved.
It is important to me that I stop wasting time and learn everything I wanted to learn about when it comes to the bible.
It is important to me to show others who are broken that GOD is still here and HE still cares.

this is only a FRACTION of what is important to me and many other Pentecostals.

NOW, I bet ya anything these things are important to you all as well. We aint that much different from each other ~~~are we.

When the Bible says tongues it isn't referring to the demonic possession people get. Its talking about an unknown language which one cannot understand if their talking about the word of the most high. People misinterpret the scriptures. One receives the holy spirit after being baptized in Christ and the father and is walking in christ and in truth.
Their is a law not to speak that Demonic language in church.

You might think you are talking to the god of the bible and receiving that language from him. But you are far from that.
You get a good sensation and a good feeling right. Examine this scripture.

2Corinthians 11:14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.

Also people who are actually possessed by demons speak the same language as the so called tongues.
And names are very important; you gotta be careful about the name you call on during prayer.
Jesus is not the most high and don't just say god because their are many so called gods out their.

Call on the god of the Hebrew by his holy name.

I think you are taking the scriptures and trying to turn them into what you want them to mean. Where in the Bible do you get that speaking in tongues means (in your words) "Its talking about an unknown language which one cannot understand if their talking about the word of the most high"? God gives us revelation and shows us what His word means. What would be the point of Him giving us a book if He doesn't help us understand it? It would be useless to us. And how could you share the gospel if you cant understand when your talking about it to others?

You're supposed to pray in Jesus name it says that in the Bible John 14:13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

I'd like you to find a scripture in the Bible that says speaking in tongues is demonic....or if you speak in tongues that means your possessed by a demon. It's not in there.

What's your point that you can get a good feeling? Being in the presence of God is always a good feeling.

Also you said one only receives the the Holy Spirit after being baptized and is walking in Christ and in truth....that isn't what the Bible says.
[SUP]
ACTS 10:43 [/SUP]To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.

[SUP]44 [/SUP]While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.
[SUP]45 [/SUP]And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.
[SUP]46 [/SUP]For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,
[SUP]47 [/SUP]Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?

Clearly these people just heard Peter preach and accepted Jesus from hearing the Word of God. God didn't tell them you have to wait til I see your walking in Christ and truth for a while and then you'll get the Holy Ghost. Also, they got the Holy Ghost before they were baptized, and as I had written before it tells you exactly how they knew they had received the Holy Ghost "for they heard them speak with tongues". Do you think if they had been just speaking in their native language that would have been evidence they were filled with the Holy Ghost?

Jesus is the only name we are saved by: Acts 4:12
Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
And he was given all power and authority in heaven: Matthew 28:18
And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
What scripture would make you think we shouldn't pray in Jesus name? If he is the one with all authority and power in heaven, don't you think we can call on Him when we pray?

When you talk to or call on God He knows you're not calling on false gods if you're really a Christian....saying you cant just say God when you're praying is making things more complicated than they need to be. Sometimes I just say Father...He knows I am talking to Him (which is the God of the Bible).

Really, Acts 2v16-21 states differently!

'But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: 'And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your young men shall see visions, Your old men shall dream dreams. And on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days; And they shall prophesy. I will show wonders in heaven above And signs in the earth beneath: Blood and fire and vapor of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness, And the moon into blood, Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord. And it shall come to pass That whoever calls on the name of the Lord Shall be saved.'

This passage of Scripture makes it abundently clear that the Baptism in the Holy Spirit (Acts 1v4,5, 2v4,38,39) and the gifts of the Holy Spirit (including the gift of tongues, 1Cor 12v7-11) are availabe throughout the WHOLE of the Age of Grace, right up to the 2nd Coming of Christ...period!
Ezekiel 32:7
A Lament for Pharaoh King of Egypt

6I will also water with your blood the land wherein you swim, even to the mountains; and the rivers shall be full of you. 7And when I shall put you out, I will cover the heaven, and make the stars thereof dark; I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon shall not give her light. 8All the bright lights of heaven will I make dark over you, and set darkness on your land, said the Lord GOD

Isaiah 13
The Judgment of Babylon
1The oracle concerning Babylon which Isaiah the son of Amoz saw.
2 On a bare hill raise a signal;
cry aloud to them;
wave the hand for them to enter
the gates of the nobles.
3 I myself have commanded my consecrated ones,
and have summoned my mighty men to execute my anger,
my proudly exulting ones.a

4 The sound of a tumult is on the mountains
as of a great multitude!
The sound of an uproar of kingdoms,
of nations gathering together!
The LORD of hosts is mustering
a host for battle.
5 They come from a distant land,
from the end of the heavens,
the LORD and the weapons of his indignation,
to destroy the whole land.b

6 Wail, for the day of the LORD is near;
as destruction from the Almightyc it will come!
7 Therefore all hands will be feeble,
and every human heart will melt.
8 They will be dismayed:
pangs and agony will seize them;
they will be in anguish like a woman in labor.
They will look aghast at one another;
their faces will be aflame.

9 Behold, the day of the LORD comes,
cruel, with wrath and fierce anger,
to make the land a desolation
and to destroy its sinners from it.
10 For the stars of the heavens and their constellations
will not give their light;
the sun will be dark at its rising,
and the moon will not shed its light.

We have here the terrible desolation of Babylon by the Medes and Persians. Those who in the day of their peace were proud, and haughty, and terrible, are quite dispirited when trouble comes. Their faces shall be scorched with the flame. All comfort and hope shall fail. The stars of heaven shall not give their light, the sun shall be darkened. Such expressions are often employed by the prophets, to describe the convulsions of governments.

the day of the LORD is several times used of God's judgment in history.

I can't see how there can be much disagreement about tongues. The bible is clear it is a gift of the spirit that some christians have. I don't, wish I did. My girlfriend has this gift. She does not use it in church, but in her own home during prayer time. She says it seems like being able to talk to and hear God in a way that is closer to God than speaking in any other way, it is a blessing.

Years ago a friend took me to his church where they spoke in tongues. Most of the ladies there were very much over weight. So many that it seemed there was a problem with them not respecting their body as a temple of God. So I did not feel God's presence in that church. Then someone spoke in tongues. Another got up to interpret. He said it meant "death of the children". My conclusion was that there are people who misuse or fake the gift.

according to some things ive read in this thread i found inferences that speaking in tongues
will lead to raising the dead.

Its inferred speaking in tongues connects with God and gives a deeper relationship and leads to deeper love

Its inferred its a proof of the Holyspirit inside has been given

etc

but the bible says all wont speak in tongues, but all believers will be filled with the Holyspirit
the bible says His love will be poured into all the hearts of bornagain believers.
the bible say anyone who draws near to God He will draw near to them
and that He wants true worship Spiritually...this is to all believers.
the bible says tongues will not be fruitful for our understanding, so we are told by Paul to pray with our understanding also
the purpose of this post was only to point out that speaking in tongues is being held out for something its not
and in doing that i see some are highminded towards those who either dont or dont believe its for today.
the bible teaches gifts are not a sing or proof of salvation, many had gifts that were not saved...the evidence is in the fruits
I'm quite curious about that one....... who are those people? Are you speaking about the Old Testament?

I would not want to be one that mocks a gift of the Holy Spirit... or mocks the way God will communicate with His children, whether it be by a vision or a dream. No one can reject this when believers are clearly having both. Don't mock a believer's testimony.

Just like many say they are christian but not all are... I imagine tongues could well be the same thing... there are those who speak it and those that fake it.. though I'm not sure how you can discern when it comes to tongues?

You can discern it through the SPIRIT if it is fake. It is as if the SPIRIT jumps inside of you and your eyes are opened and it is revealed to you that this person is faking it. It is by revelation and that is when you seek GOD and HE tells you how to handle the situation, esp if it is a person that walks into your church and does this.
in other words, because of the HOLY SPIRIT inside of you, you just know.

Judas was one, Balaam hmm forget. But its still not a biblical concept to say
because you speak in tongues you have proof of the Holyspirit inside
Jesus made that clear...many will say to me on that day Lord Lord................
but 1 cor 13 is between 12 and 14 for a reason and gifts never were evidence
of anything really.
