Okay so i don't know much about it, i heard it's a gift that anyone can receive if they ask for it. Which would be great because for some reason i feel i need to start speaking in tongues in my prayers and my praises. It seems to me to be a powerful weapon of sort, Every testimony i hear of it they talk about how it somehow empowered them. So what exactly does one do to receive this gift? And what exactly does it do?I guess to me it seems to be a booster drink of sorts, like it not just empowers us but greatly pleases the lord as well.

I never have that I know of. One time I was praying and I when I realized it I didn't even know what I had been saying. I really don't know. I just remember reading in acts when the apostles were speaking in tongues of every language. I also had a man at church come up behind me and just start praying in tongues. When he was done I got up and walked without any pain. I had a bad knee injury at the time. It was amazing.

There's nothing to "do", Blain. Just ask the Lord for it, trust His decision to give it to you or not, and if you hear some words in your head, try letting them come out. Discernment is whether or not it helps you feel closer to Him, and if it makes a positive change in your prayer life. You still have my and Sonny's phone number (He is going by Maynard, since his dad died); we both have tongues, and could pray with you. Or, I'm kenbehrens1 on Skype; set up an appointment by e-mail, and we can maybe get together by voice.

when you are filled with the HOLY SPIRIT tongues comes with it. It is the evidence of the infilling of the HOLY SPIRIT. There is nothing to do to have this evidence except acts 2:38... which is repent, be baptized in the name of JESUS for the remissions of your sins and you shall receive the gift of the HOLY SPIRIT.

All through the book of acts you can read about how people when they get the HS the evidence speaking in tongues.

And why is it tongues? Because in the book of James we see that the tongue is the most unruly member of our body and if GOD can control the tongue, HE has us.

I'm here if you want to talk with me more about this belief, my belief. send me a message or something.
peace.

you should be very familiar with what is recorded about this. and not go on what people say. because what is done today is not what is written about it . people are really doing ignorant things. and why would you want to follow that ???? Read whats written to get to the heart of the matter... people will most likely confuse you if you give them the chance.. best i can do is simple read over all the places we can in the bible about what it all means, and look at the words in the Greek . Following the subject to learn what says God about it to the letter...

if you want to talk, lets talk in chat room. and read the scriptures together .

There is a bit of a study that can found Here that deals with the Baptism in the Holy Spirit and the gift of tongues...

Yahweh Shalom...

Speaking in tongues is just one of the spiritual gifts God offers. I don't speak in tongues, yet I'm a Christian. I've seen the gift of tongues be faked and abused but some people are genuine and find it brings them closer to God. I'm not saying tongues are bad but I'm discerning about such things. Also, prophecy. Everyone wants to be a prophet.

In Acts2v4. 10v45,46. 11v17. and 19v6., when Christians received the baptism in the Spirit, they all spoke
with tongues. With the exception of the outpouring at Ephesus, we do not read of any other manifestations of
the gifts, and at Ephesus they prophesied in addition to speaking in tongues. From humble housewives to
mighty apostles, the initial conclusive evidence of their baptism in the Spirit was speaking in tongues. The Holy
Spirit did not give various gifts as the evidence of the baptism, He gave the gifts of tongues to all. Peter did not
say that the household of Cornelius had received the Holy Spirit because they had believed the Gospel, and had
accepted Christ, or were filled with joy, or were living sanctified lives, desirable and essential as all these are.
Peter said that they were unmistakably filled with the Holy Spirit, because they had spoken with tongues, like
the 120 on the day of Pentecost. Acts.11v17,18.

could not have said it better myself.

You move into dangerous territory when you start to claim one has to speak tongues to be a Christian. It's ONE of God's spiritual gifts to his people. Not the only one and not the most important. I feel there's too much emphasis on some of these things and not enough emphasis on God and serving him.A

And your signature isn't funny, it's arrogant.

whoa dude. girl can't have a fun time in chat. ok.

But I'm not on dangerous ground, everyone that I know that has been filled with the SPIRIT has talked in tongues as evidence.

It's ok if you don't believe me, I'm not looking for approval.

Read the book of Acts. it's all in there.

p.s. I like my signature. :)

I apologise. I understand that you're not looking for approval but I want to follow God's Truth, not a Pentecostal understanding of his truth. I've read the book of Acts and if you read it in context, you'll find there are a myriad of spiritual gifts, only one of them is speaking in tongues.

um, I'm not following a "pentecostal understanding". That was just insulting. I can study/read the bible just like every other joe shmoe. And I'm telling ya that the book of acts is still for us today. And I can read things in context just fine. It is always the same thing when someone doesn't agree with someone else, they always say "you read it out of context" ....

whatever.

Uhh... time out?

Jinx: the bible says that not all will speak in tongues, not all will prophecy, etc. It's something for God to decide.

Tintin: I don't think Jinx is saying that people who don't speak in tongues are non-Christians, I think she's saying that people who don't speak in tongues are not Spirit-filled. Which I don't agree with, because the bible says that God will give the Holy Spirit to whoever asks.

Now you can both tell me to buzz off, lol.

I understand that Acts is still for us today. I believe miracles, speaking in tongues, healings - all of that still happens. I'm disputing the belief that I can't be a Christian if I don't speak in tongues. It's good that you read the Bible in context.

Every denomination has too much of a focus on something. For Pentecostals it's speaking in tongues and prophecy, for Lutherans there's not much focus on the Holy Spirit and the spiritual reality we live in, for Catholics it's too much man-made tradition and superstition. No denomination has the Truth 100% but there are core foundations to each Christian denomination that are shared by those belonging to the Christian faith.

lets me get this out there, then you all can bash..... (without me cause i would have said my peace and be done with it)
This is what I believe.....
acts 2:38 is still for us. those who are filled with the SPIRIT have spoken in tongues as evidence. didn't speak in it, then you didn't get filled with the SPIRIT.
and yes if you ask you shall receive.

The epistles where it talks about gifts, that was for already filled believers who have already have had the evidence of speaking in tongues.

Blain asked a question. I gave him and answer, and he responded. I'm not here to have convince anyone. If you don't believe it, I can't make you. but don't jump down my throat when all I was doing was answering a question someone specifically asked someone who had spoken in tongues.

p.s. I'm not saying people in here who haven't spoke in tongues don't have a relationship with GOD either. just to be clear on that end as well.

peace out.

Well, in all seriousness... fun on these forums is secondary. Not saying it can't be had with serious topics, but it is primarily a serious forum.
But I'm not on dangerous ground, everyone that I know that has been filled with the SPIRIT has talked in tongues as evidence.
1) It is most commonly faked because pentecostal churches pressure people into yelling gibberish as necessary for salvation. This is unfortunately rather common, and used to be the way a rather large portion of Pentecostalism approached the matter.
2) You are on dangerous ground when you preach "Gospel +"; when you add to the Gospel you are on dangerous ground. Speaking in tongues doesn't save you.

Read the book of Acts. it's all in there
It's not in there the way you preach it. Speaking in tongues on the basis of scripture isn't gibberish. In Acts 2, it's a human language.

There's a reason why Pentecostalism never existed for 1800 years of Christian history.

I'm glad to know what a person believes, but what is most important is to know what scripture teaches. Often, these two do not coincide. ;)

Yep. Pentecostals tend to disregard scripture and embrace anything they deem "Spiritual" which typically is just "how emotional does it make me feel?"
