I've just been reading parts of the thread, and thot I could join the conversation=)..
It used to be that being an archipelago, many remote islands in the country have not been reached by much of the global culture easily accessible by internet now. I have a cousin in NJ whose parents migrated to the US many yrs ago.. and I heard he was still more interested in this rural/ provincial woman he met than other more glamorous-- or monied perhaps he meets. Many factors could have contributed to his choice.
As mentioned, sadly there could be gold diggers anywhere, even in PH. But with more women w/ higher education, studying abroad too, Filipino women are not as they probably were too. They've found better jobs or succeeded in businesses, and so not always looking to find rich foreigners as spouses.
My sister for one, who finished her PhD abroad, is now married to a very proud American who can't seem to stop finding things to praise abt his wife and her culture. He esp wanted their children to meet not only her family here, but the rest of the extended family, as well as many others he encounters in conventions, on the road, the market, anywhere.. Of course he's not blind to the hardship of life in the typhoon-hit and volcanic eruption-hit country, but seems to see more the hardworking others and their resilience, in spite of some people still just eating, drinking and being fiesta-merry in the still highly R. Catholic nation.
