You are ignoring the spectrum of political views. Today in America it goes from the left to the right:
Progressive, liberal, moderate, conservative. Liberal and moderate are much closer to conservative values than progressives are. There is a wide divide between progressive and liberal. Part of that is religion. Progressives tend to reject God. Another part is progressives want to fundamentaly change the US. Obama announced that. He and the Democrats started with Obama Care and Dodd Frank financial law. Republicans took congress as a result.
