It was not until 533 A.D., as part of a sweeping reform of Roman law, that Byzantine (East Roman) Emperor Justinian declared that homosexuality was the crime of the Sodomites and established the death penalty for same-sex relations. In other words, it was not a pope, not a prophet — not even a writer of scripture — who determined that Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed because of homosexuality. It was an emperor who wanted to outlaw same-sex relations and who also linked famines, earthquakes and other natural disasters to the “crime” of homosexuality.
