The Shack. Powerful stuff and very emotionally touching. If you watch it you'll learn why.
Is this somehow different from the book? Personally I wouldn't get anywhere near that just due to the consensus that others have come to about the novel.

Why would you let others decide for you?
I loved the movie. Didn't read the book.
Some critics arrived from a Seminary point of view and criticized the movie from the closed canon perspective; God doesn't speak to modern day people personally, only through His word.

That's ridiculous.

I'm not suggesting that the Lord cannot speak. Simply that there are many false voices out there, to the point that if the original work was under such suspicion and scrutiny and that there was a whole line planned but then it's almost as if the author "gave away too much" and turned off unsuspecting believers to the message. Everything was scrapped and now we have the film.

Personally I am inclined to roll along with the original consensus of something as having agreement between believers. It's not someone "deciding for me" it's being alignment with Godly counsel. It gives me encouragement in my original mistrust of something. People that I hadn't ever once heard speak about Jesus were encouraging me to read the shack, like that was going to allow me to "see the light" etc. So I was suspicious, and then all the later stuff came out.

We could have a long discussion on the fact that the Director, the distribution company (and it's parent company) are clearly worldly companies/individuals. To me that's akin to going to a church where I know the pastor is an atheist but he knows the bible really well and I think it makes sense to learn from him, but then that brings up a larger argument that would be difficult to have via text.

I'm not suggesting the Lord "cannot" use stuff like that, however I am leaning toward "will not" (although not resolutely). Certainly not for me at present, all I see is propaganda.

An original work that is "based" off a man's life experiences but the actual experiences are not given and the assertions that he makes that came from "god" is eerily resonant of Joseph smith's revelations. "well yeah, it's unscriptural, but it came from god!" OK.

So for such uncertainty to come from the work it makes sense to be cautious about the film doesn't it?

I mean, I got emotional about War horse back when I watched films, reasonably clean...and that was one that it seemed "something" was asking a question about. What's wrong with this film? Again, I can't see anything "wrong" with it from a worldly perspective, at least not with taking a HARD look...but how did it advance the gospel? It is hard to say at this juncture. Due to the fact that it is hard to say, it stands to reason that it is unwise to continue to look for Jesus in a place where one has to look "that" hard to make any argument that he is there and that such ventures are beneficial to our personal walk with the Lord.

I want to also add, The Shack, as an excellent Christian movie. But bring lots of tissues , you'll need them. And I love movies with a twist that I didn't foresee. This movie has that big time.

My wife and I saw this movie and both enjoyed. The movie definitely had a message of forgiveness.

Whatever works for you is what you have to go with I guess.
As for aligning with others as a matter of "Godly counsel" , I would say that is the same thing as letting others decide for you, who has Holy Spirit God living within. As an example of the aligning you mention, consider here at this site. It is a site for Christians to chat.
Consider the BDF. Would you consider that to have an atmosphere of those aligned in Godly Counsel?

There was a movie made some years ago about a long distance horse rider. A true story retold. Great movie, I have the DVD.
Before it hit theaters a bunch of people opposed to the film made some scurrilous claims about the man it was portraying. The real life long distance horse rider. They were lies. However, they snowballed to such an extent that the movie suffered a very poor audience turn out.
Most of the audience attending were actually too young to know who the real life man being portrayed was. As was the case with those who were middle age to 70.
Maybe watch a few trailers of The Shack, there are many at YT.

I've found a great many movies I loved when I went with my own decision and watched them anyway.
The Passion of the Christ being one of my favorites. We watched that after having to stand in the theater hall waiting for the last show filled to capacity to empty out. Meanwhile, a Jewish activist was outside the theater door handing out pamphlets condemning the film as Antisemitic. It wasn't. Of course the man that played Jesus has not worked since. And Mel Gibson was set up with a DUI arrest and horrific slanderous claims he'd made horrific Antisemitic remarks to the arresting officers. All this after the film made MG , producer and director, a film that grossed over 1 Billion world wide.

That would tend to get the haters just a little agitated when their smear campaign didn't work out.

Life is choice. We have to live with that. :)
Blessings.

Agreed. Risen was a great film. Especially when the Roman soldier comes into the realization. You know the part. I loved that scene. Ray Fiennes is wonderful in this movie.
Exactly, same here. I also especially like that the story seems totally plausible. I can clearly imagine God using a centurion to lead the apostles safely away during the chaos.

Overcomer had me crying, laughing and cheering. This is one of the most powerful scenes in the movie. How many of us can identify with the basketball coach? I know I can....or at least I did, watching this again helps remind me of who I am and whose I am.

The Gospel of Matthew
The Gospel of Luke
The Gospel of John
and the book of Acts...

All Scripture in the films...

The book of Acts gives also a great visual insight into what Paul went through , I watch them many times , some of the films are long which is great , well worth checking out...

Indeed. The Book of Matthew in chapter eight shares with us that Jesus healed a Centurion's servant. The man's faith was so genuine that Jesus did not even have to go to his house to do so, and in fact the Centurion said he did not feel himself worthy of receiving Jesus there. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew+8:5-7&version=NKJV
If Jesus would heal the servant of an officer in the Roman army and due to his faith, I can believe Jesus would still lead those who attended His crucifixion to faith.
The Roman army regularly crucified people and must surely have tired of the gore. But Jesus' crucifixion was different and I do believe that that would have had an affect on those in attendance at what they thought was just another killing of one Rome's laws thought worthy.
I have a copy of Risen in my DVD library. Very good film. Deeply moving. And it was quite unique in sharing the perspective of a Tribune, ranked higher than a Centurion in the army, at his evolving levels of fealty.

If I keep it up I'm going to watch it again this weekend. :giggle: Especially after that trailer re-run.
And I loved the horses in the film. Beautiful. And the actor that played our Lord was ideally suited, given his appearance. Wonderful casting all around.

Ahh now you're making me want to rewatch it too, I agree with all of your points. I also own the film, albeit it's a digital copy.

I Can Only Imagine. It hit so close to home. I warned my friends that I'm probably going weep at some point during the movie, and sure enough..
