I remember the Jack and the beanstalk being rather disturbing and it was told from the giants wifes perspective. Her husband had I believe a medical issue which required bone marrow which is why they used English mens bones for baking bread. He ends up dying anyway but it's a bit depressing that he was eating people so he could survive not because he was just mean.

Two of my favorite books as a child were Black Storm, by Thomas C. Hinkle, published in 1929, and Champion Dog: Prince Tom, a true story of Tom Clute and his Spaniel, written by him with by Jean Fritz. Looking at the reviews for the latter, it is really not surprising that it is such a well loved book read multiple times by those who find it... and not just children
