Look at the Original Brothers Grimm versions of the "Fairytales" dark, disturbing and NOT a happy ending lol.

I still have the VHS and the parody book is imo better so is "Eat cheese and Barf" Gooflumps where great 😂

Oh, but you see, I did not know about Grimm, so a fairytale was like when the beautiful, yet poor girl, married the prince. Aww, that was much better than the realistic, French stories lol.

I remember the Jack and the beanstalk being rather disturbing and it was told from the giants wifes perspective. Her husband had I believe a medical issue which required bone marrow which is why they used English mens bones for baking bread. He ends up dying anyway but it's a bit depressing that he was eating people so he could survive not because he was just mean.

I found the stories about the swamp monster (not the ones up in DC😁), but le Rougarou😟 scary.

It’s the Louisiana Swamp Monster. A terrible being. Yes, sort of a werewolf. But it can be anybody...even your neighbor...😳.

We have something here called the Beast of Bray Road it's a werewolf like cryptid. Always wanted to see it lol

Oh no, you must not wish for that. My grandmother used to tell me about a man from Baton Rouge, he was mocking le Rougarou, but they say the monster got him and dragged him down in the bayou.

Two of my favorite books as a child were Black Storm, by Thomas C. Hinkle, published in 1929, and Champion Dog: Prince Tom, a true story of Tom Clute and his Spaniel, written by him with by Jean Fritz. Looking at the reviews for the latter, it is really not surprising that it is such a well loved book read multiple times by those who find it... and not just children :)
