Men should smell nice and masculine. And they should talk about scents with their significant other. And Old Spice is classic. But if you are willing to speak to the issue publicly, you might as well express your affinity to choose curtains and duvet covers. And sorry, but that disqualifies one from holding a man card.

Lol! Sorry Cameron... My parents have both been hugely into both interior and exterior home designs all my life and sometimes my Dad gets even more excited over colors and patterns than my Mom, so I'm a bit biased. 😂

I think you are conflating two things. It's okay for men to do those things. What gets their card taken away is talking about it.

I guess I'm weird because I'm from a family with straight men who not only talk about it, but also have HGTV playing in their homes.

They pick out drapes and paint colors...

So for me, it's not conflating -- it's my personal experience of what's normal, which is apparently abnormal to most others.

I'm really okay with whatever someone feels comfortable with. But if a male in my circle of friends were to publicly make such an admission, they would probably be teased.

I'm really touched that people are taking the time to put such care into their posts. This is definitely a thread that could easily be dismissed as frivolous and needless, but one of the reasons I started it is because I had recently had women's preventative healthcare checkup.

I was wondering if any of the ladies out there have gone through female cancers and were told to avoid these kinds of products, and if so, how it affects their families. For instance, would she then prevent her kids from using aftershaves and scented products?

I want you all to know that I'm reading each post and taking each suggestion to heart, and I greatly appreciate your thoughtfulness.

There's no limit on what chemicals can be legally used as a "fragrance". .. labeling laws. That's why I think you are wise to consider this topic for your health.
I use non scented laundry detergents. That ounce of soap on laundry day has helped clients with sleep apnea and congestion at night.

I like nice smells. I get them in the form of soaps, shampoos, and hand lotions. I also like essential oils and have used them with diffusers in the past. It is more of a cold weather thing to do because diffusers produce heat. I have not researched too much, but I would not assume these things to be harmful especially if they are made with natural products. God has not told me these items are sinful. I was once gifted an expensive lotion which I had a urge to buy, but I felt it was wrong to waste money on it.

I'm a person that would enjoy scent based products, if I were able. In particular I like sweet or citrus based smells. More traditional flowery odors I've never been crazy about.
But I'm actually unable to handle most of them due to allergic reactions. I used to enjoy scented candles, but they caused problems for me and had to quit. I can't use any sprays for odor. Basically anything scented.
I have to use laundry detergent with no scent, otherwise wearing those clothes will cause me to have trouble breathing and give me headaches.
In fact pretty much anything scented has that effect on me.
Scented hand soaps i can get away with usually, because they're often too mild to be a problem, but there are certain ones I may avoid. If I put my hands near my nose after using them I'll still have adverse affects.
Any strong chemical smell affects me. I can't use most cleaning products, for example, either.
Currently with my health issues my sensitivity to odor is Way, way heightened and things I used to find unpleasant but tolerable, now intolerable. Even certain types of cooking can send me running to another room barely able to breath through the odor.
This can, at times, make my doctor or hospital visits tricky with many nurses and employees wearing perfume or other scented products. It's especially bad if it's a hospital nurse you'll have for 12 hours.

So I do like the idea of the use of things that cause pleasant odors, I simply am unable. If you're able to do it reasonably, then I'd think it's fine. If you feel there's a problem doing so, such as the scented candles, perhaps limit how often you use them.

Scented candles, perfumes, car fresheners, all that stuff is appealing to me. Left to my own devices, my sense of smell would likely be deadened within a decade. But I’m in a similar boat to @Subhumanoidal—the chemicals trigger headaches. Just wasn’t meant to be, I guess.

I get headaches from some strong perfumes esp ones drenched in alcohol
some friends gift me weird smelling things or give me old clothes smelling of their perfume and I literally have to remove them

The body sprays etc just mask that they dont wash for some, high school boys would use lynx and girls would use impulse after PE

But those are all artificial fragrances.

I like natural fragrances essential oils, fresh flowers, spices, herbs etc
As christians we are to be a sweet savour, put prayers are as incense, and yes the anointing oil poured on Jesus head and feet were fragrant and it was very expensive for Mary to buy it.

In the Bible there is a recipe for the special fragrant oil the priests used. I will see if can find it.

my go to essential oils are lavender and tea tree, I use lemon and citrus, peppermint, love lemon verbena, and ylang ylang, gardenia, coconut and olive and almond oils
Jojoba and shea body butter.
I grow a lot of herbs and just like the scent they release when you crush their leaves.

Soy Wax candles are fine, but I am techinically not allowed candles in the house since the time mum thought Id left one unattended and nearly burned the house down. (I didnt, but she banned them anyway)

The smell of my bed buddy catching fire in the microwave though was not a nice smell.

I hate ammonia and chlorine and the smell of bleach.

I love aromatic roses. At one place I lived I planted a large rose gardens. I only planted roses that gave off a lot of fragrance. My favorite is the yellow rose so I planted as many varieties of those as I could find. One day there were hundreds of blooms and there was a place as people walke down the sidewalk where people would meet the fragrance. People would stop there. I enjoyed watching that. The next morning every single bloom was gone, thanks to the local deer. Nothing I tried kept them away so the majesty of the garden could only be enjoyed once or twice each season.

why would they be teased

militias need colours, with flags and medals etc. They are often obssessed with colours. Wearing uniform can make you aware of all the other colours around, not everything is going to be khaki green. Wearing camoflage only works if the surrounding areas are the same colours. And sports people are obssesed with colours too. Just look at all the sportswear brands.

Serendipity is a good one. I also like the thornless yellow climbing rose though it had no scent.

There was a rose garden at the retirment village I worked in though they didnt always have the old fashioned scented roses, it was more for colour. Iceberg standards, Blackberry Nip and rosa mutablis were popular.

Pruning the climbing roses was a huge job!

I prefer sweet peas though its a more delicate fragrance and only lasts for a short season but is just heavenly to pick a bunch of sweet peas. I can never grow the exotic ones I just have the originals cos they come up every year and self seed.
