The Carpenters made it big with Ticket to Ride, and various other Beatles songs.

But that was their big hit - a Beatles cover

Tiffany also had one with I saw Him Standing there

of course the genders of the songs got changed. Depending on whos singing it.

i havent thought of what would be my Beatles signature tune cover yet. I'll have to get back to you on that one...

I did a lot of writing of short stories way back in the day. Submitted to many mystery and science fiction magazines, such as Alfred Hitchcock, Ellery Queen, Fantasy & Science Fiction. Got a bunch of rejection slips for my efforts. Again, no talent. Gave it up and joined the United States Army. There I had a modicum of talent. That's another story though.

I always wondered why people join the army

is being a soldier fun? I dont think I could handle it always being told what to do and fight wars etc. I suppose you feel like you are defending your country but...what if you dont agree with their tactics. I dunno. Maybe you have to be very patriotic.

I dont think many people read magazines anymore
I only read the garden ones but I dont write for them, I write on my own blogs and can write what I like. Just dont get paid. Also never get rejected lol.

Im probably the only one that reads it though.
When I read books, I dont tend to go for short stories...I enjoy long ones, series or picture books. Or really short parables like the ones Jesus told that are easy to remember.

Sorry Katherine Mansfield.

Im not sure mystery and sci fi magazines even exist?! I mean Ive never seen or read one. Not in bookshops or libraries, that ive been working in for years.

Well, today pretty much ran the gamut of emotions.

I'll just share the best part of the day quickly...

We were scheduled to stop at 3 wineries and 1 distillery today, and we were supposed to spend 1 hour at each of them.

At our third stop, I sat down at an outdoor table with an engaged couple who were in their sixties and who were not a part of my tour group. We had a good chat with each other for a complete hour, and then I was expecting our bus/trolley to come in order to take me and my group to our final destination. Well, precisely at that point in time, the man noticed my Christian-themed ballcap and inquired about it. Next thing I knew, he and I spent another complete hour going back and forth on the topic of Christ/Christianity. Why our bus/trolley was an hour late in picking us up, I don't know, but I'm thankful for the opportunity presented to me today. The man is a Buddhist, and my arguments in favor of salvation through Christ didn't convince him today, but at least the Holy Spirit now has something to work with in his life or to seek to give the increase to.

His name is Jim if anybody wants to say a prayer for him.

P.S.

God only knows how many conversations I've entered into with people about Christ because they noticed something Christian-themed that I was wearing. It really is a good conversation starter if any of you are evangelistically inclined.

I dont have any christian themed clothes..I know you did t-shirts and caps but I've never had a christian t shirt or cap...churches dont seem to give out or sell clothing. Or not the ones I have been to.

Ive never seen shops selling them either. Maybe its just something you need to improvise yourself. I know theres a embroidery place but I dont really wear clothes with lots of words on them.

I do have an angel outfit though I made from a blanket that I wear carolling. with wings.

Before I got saved, I was the biggest coward ever. In fact, without even being consciously aware of it until after I became a Christian, for many years, I walked with my head down, looking at the ground, to avoid even having to make eye contact with people. If I was ever called upon in school to answer a question, or if I ever had to speak in front of people for any reason at all, then my head would literally spin, and I honestly felt as if I was going to pass out.

Well, when I became a Christian and read what Jesus said about those who are ashamed of him and his words or how Christians ought to confess him before men, I decided to do something to sort of force myself out of my shell. While I was at a Flea Market one day, there was a man there with an airbrushing booth, and I had him airbrush me a t-shirt which simply said "Jesus Saves". I still remember the first time that I wore it. At the job that I was working at back then, they had a "Dress Down Friday" every week where you could come to work in casual clothing. Well, I showed up to work wearing sneakers, and jeans, and my "Jesus Saves" t-shirt. I literally felt as if I was going to black out several times during that day, but that was my first attempt at trying to publicly witness for Christ. In fact, my first attempt to publicly confess Christ didn't go unnoticed. To my surprise, the janitor in our building commented on my t-shirt, and he and I briefly engaged in a conversation about Christ.

Now, I'm free from the fear of man that imprisoned me because God has done quite a work to liberate me internally from the same. To this day, however, I still regularly wear Christian-themed shirts, hoodies, and ballcaps, and they definitely have worked as "ice-breakers", or "door-openers", or they've definitely helped to pave the way for me to have conversations with a bunch of different people about Jesus Christ.

Some of my experiences have almost been comical, and this following one is the one of them.

I was actually having a conversation about Jesus/Christianity with my younger sister many years ago while we were driving together on the highway in her car. Well, she didn't like what I had to say, and she literally threw me out of her car on the highway. We were about an hour's drive from my home at the time, and several hours away in walking distance. Anyhow, I was wearing a t-shirt that day that depicted a man lying dead in the street with tire tracks on top of him, and the t-shirt said in bold letters above the image "DON'T BE CAUGHT DEAD WITHOUT JESUS". Below the image it read "For unless you believe that I am he, you shall die in your sins" (John 8:24).

To my surprise (I had this shirt many years ago), I just found an image of the t-shirt after Googling it:

deadshirt.jpg

This incident occurred before cell phones, so I started my trek along the side of the highway towards a Mall that I knew was approximately a 30 minute walk away so I could use a payphone to call a friend to hopefully pick me up and drive me home. So, I'm walking along the side of this busy highway, and who do I see walking along this same side of the highway, but in the opposite direction, or heading right towards me?

A bunch of Hasidic Jews.

What in the world they were doing walking along the side of a highway I'll never know, but I do know this:

Eventually, we all met, face to face, and every one of them glanced at my t-shirt and read it.

They say that "A picture is worth a thousand words", and I'll never forget the looks on their faces after reading my t-shirt.

Anyhow, incidents like that make me wonder if they're not some sort of "Divine appointment" or "Divine encounter".

Jesus said to preach the gospel to every creature, and I'll use every means available to try to reach someone for Christ...even if/though most people think I'm crazy or "beside myself".

II Corinthians chapter 5

[13] For whether we be beside ourselves, it is to God: or whether we be sober, it is for your cause.
[14] For the love of Christ constrains us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead:
[15] And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again.

Being a soldier is hard.

You are usually hundreds or thousands of miles away from your family for months or years at a time. You live each day wondering if you are going to be deployed to a war zone. The working hours are horrendous. You cannot quit but must serve your enlistment, which, in time of war can be extended indefinitely.

I did not consider myself patriotic but did serve proudly and honorably.

The most basic purpose of the US military is to break things and kill people.

So, your options are, once you sign the contract, is to complete your enlistment or go to jail.

Believe me, it was not fun although it was probably the most rewarding thing I have done in my lifetime. Not only are you defending your country, and other countries besides, at the time on your enlistment you take an oath to defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic.

That is the mission, first, last, always.

oh ok

just wondering
I read a historical fiction about Vietnam (from nz persepective) but the nz soldier were piggybacking on the Australians. I dont know if they had to take oaths. They just went where they got sent, no choice about it.

The nurses had it rough but I think if you are young you dont really think too far ahead. Most people came out of it thinking it was a huge waste of time, if they actually came out alive.

There are librarians in the defence forces too and I think they have to provide a lot of 'wellbeing' literature to take soldiers minds off the horrors of war. I know the US librarians basically provided their soldiers with porn. It was meant to be their solace (as most of the soliers were young males in their 20s)

NZ doesnt have a constitution, but they did fight on behalf of the British. Ended up losing so many esp in Gallipoli that the entire country was in mourning for years afterward. The RSAs were supportive of returned soldiers of the first and second world wars but totally snubbed those involved in Vietnam. It was shameful.

Im not sure if they had a draft or conscription then in nz I think it was voluntary.

I popped into the Christian bookshop and saw they now DO have a line of clothing, shirts and hoodies! I might go back and have a closer look when I go clothes shopping next week.

Volunteers are the way to go. They tend to be more motivated than those that were drafted. I was a volunteer.

I think after the first world war it was voluntary. Before that was conscription/draft and men who didnt go were called cowards and got a white feather, or conchies and got sent to jail.

In the first world war lots of men deliberately malingered or injured themselves to get out of it. But then the able bodied men would get injured anyway.

That type of behavior is totally unacceptable. God bless the able-bodied men who answered the call.

why would you want to fight someone elses battle though
Not sure getting it cos weaponry doesnt require an able body anymore. You just press a button and bow up things or send drones.

They shirked their duty. God appointed another to take their place. Some of those didn't make it home. Others, with life-altering disabilities. Those that dodged the draft should be ashamed of themselves.
