I have decided the autopilot mentality is the aspect I most dislike about humanity. Instead of evaluating a situation, we humans (I said we, I'm including myself in this, I do it too) make snap decisions and stick with them just because an aspect of the situation fits what we have already decided we would accept or reject.

"Let's change to this new way because it is new!"
I can't count how many people I know who have taken their perfectly fine computer they were happy with and upgraded to a new system they hate, just because it was new.

"Let's stay with this old way because we know it."
That misses out on a lot of new stuff that really is better.

"Let's do this because it is different."
Never be different just for the sake of being different. Only be different when different is better.

"I like that song because it's in (random) style, and I know that movie will stink because (actor) is in it."
Well people like what they like, but you're going to miss a lot of great songs and movies. (Though if it's a Michael Bay movie you already pretty much know how it will go...) :p

We cruise through life accepting or rejecting situations based on what we have already decided we like and don't like. We don't see the new situation, we only see the aspects of it that fit our hardcoded response templates. This causes so much trouble, so many missed opportunities and so much loss.

The only way I know to fix the problem is to be conscious of my own reflexive reactions and slow down and actually LOOK at a new situation. But I haven't figured out how to make the rest of the world do that.

Yes and no. :)

Being selectively aware is pretty much Biblical is it not? I mean, if Actor "A" is in a movie, and Actor "A" is known for (fill in the blank), nothing wrong with not watching the Movie/Show. As for music, when it comes to much of the weird Rock and Rap music today...........yeah, no thanks. Not a thing Biblical about them. So I'm fine cruising past those Stations on my radio. :)

I love Country Music, however, I do not listen to the modern day Country Music Stations because the Singers/Songs have become "cookie cutter." Every one sounds just like the last/next to play. Now I go by the Singer to determine if I want to listen to it.

Sometimes "sticking with the tried and true" is the very best thing to do in my opinion.

Anyway.............

The counter problem to this is when you do step out and try something new or do something different for you, people you know bug you about they thought you didn't like x or are so suprised that you've done y and when did you change your mind about this and they just need to mind their own business and not act like it's a big deal until you do.

I learnt something this afternoon, apparently if you managed to setup a date with a girl that's happening in a few days via text/chat. You still need to maintain rapport during that period or they will flake out.

Tried and true can be good. New can be good. What I object to is ALWAYS going with what is new, just for the sake of being new, or ALWAYS sticking with what is tried and true just because it's easier, without actually looking at the options and evaluating them on their own merits.

Ugh, don't get me started! You have no idea how many people think I hate (music genre A) because they once heard me listening to (other music genre B) and they thought anybody who listens to (music genre B) would naturally hate (music genre A.)

We were going to a singing one night and my aunt predicted I would not enjoy it because "It's a lot of southern gospel, you don't like that." Really? Tell that to all the albums I have from the Hinsons, Gold City, Cathedrals, Hemphills... a quarter of my music collection is southern gospel. But she heard me listening to christian rap once, so she just naturally assumed I hated southern gospel.

I gotta vote with the girl on this one. If I set up a date with a girl in a few days and we never spoke for the few days in between, I would think she wasn't really very interested in going on the date.

Of course it works both ways... why did SHE not contact YOU for the few days while she was busy flaking out? Is there a lack of interest on both sides?

I have decided life is the most upside-down thing I've ever seen.

If you think you are somebody, you're really a nobody.

You can't get away from being a nobody until you realize you're not a somebody. ONLY when you realize you are a nobody, then God can start making you a somebody.

But if you realize you are a somebody and you get some pride about it, you're back to being a nobody again. You can only be a somebody when you ignore the fact that you are a somebody.

This seems contradictory, paradoxical and frustrating, but I have never seen it work any other way. This is just the way life works.

I couldn't agree more!! Still battle with it, but it is so true. He is now making me a somebody. Praise His Holy Name.

1000 Amens at this...You can't get away from being a nobody until you realize you're not a somebody. ONLY when you realize you are a nobody, then God can start making you a somebody!! Quite profound art thou..:)

What if id rather be a “nobody”?
Yeah, I'd LOVE to be a nobody. God just loves pushing people who LIKE being nobodies out into the spotlight. He told me to go be a preacher. :-/

when our Saviour says' that we are 'somebody', then we had better believe Him and not deny His Holy-Word -
take Him at His Word, and your new journey will take you to places that your 'old-man' could never conceive of...
