I talk on the phone as little as I can get away with, only taking calls from friends and family, and even then, they know the best way to get a hold of me is through text. It's getting tougher though as I've found my insurance companies are outsourcing out-of-state call centers, and I usually don't answer any number outside of the state where I live.
I prefer to do as much communication as possible in writing unless it's something that needs a lot of explaining or back-and-forth discussion. This way I can take care of conversations or questions when I'm in a long line at the store or in between running errands -- I love the convenience, and no getting stuck listening to a long diatribe regarding Aunt Bertha's bunions yet again, which she mentions every time she's on the phone.
Don't get me wrong, part of the charm of some people is listening to their stories over and over again (goodness knows I'm guilty of the same thing -- just read my posts!) but that's what I love about writing. If someone doesn't want to read what I wrote or has already heard the story, they can skip right over it for their own convenience (or sanity!)
Writing is just more efficient for me -- but I do admit that I love the magic of hearing someone's voice for the first time if I've only met them through written words.

Ironic timing...
I just got a text from someone getting back to me about an appointment I had requested -- which I also made through text instead of calling.
Another reason I choose writing for almost all my communication is so that I have irrefutable proof that an appointment was made, a service was promised, a change was agreed upon, etc.
It's a sad fact of modern life, but you just can't trust anyone's spoken word these days. I think we've all run into times when a doctor's office, insurance agency, or some other business has tried to say they said this or that, or, "No, your appointment was for the day before and you missed it, so now we're charging you" (such as doctors' offices will do,) etc. Or, "No, we never promised such-and-such..." but the representative had told you differently on the phone.
So as a means of trying to watch my back whenever I can, I always feel most secure when I can get any term of agreement in the form of a timestamped message in writing that can be produced in the case of any dispute.

Only time I answer is if it's a family member, which is rare, or I'm waiting for a doctor's call back. I have no friends to call me.
Currently, though, I never answer as I'm still recovering from surgery and unable to talk, anyways. Which is tricky since I get plenty of calls related to my procedure, recovery, etc... and have no way to communicate with them often.
