My paycheck is the smallest thing in the house now and it doesn't engage well with the bills. But that's backwards from the clues, so...

Let me give the 2nd hint its own post, just so no one misses it.

Hint 2: This password is known as something that engages when certain unwanted things go beyond specific parameters.

(Hint 1 was: This word used to be known as the smallest "something" in the house. In america)

I had originally included babysitter in the inquiry, which makes me think of a television which 'engages' the attention of children, or distracts them, from persisting in unwanted behaviors.

I presently can only think of one thing that fits hint #1 - but, I do not see how it would fit hint #2.

However because of family obligations, I am not able to monitor the responses to the clues in a timely way.
Quite frankly, I don't think it would really matter that much if you were only able to give it attention once or twice a day...?

Hint 3: The password is a compound word, and both a noun and a verb. The second part of the word can be defined as someone who protects something.

(Hint 2: This password is known as something that engages when certain unwanted things go beyond specific parameters.)

(Hint 1: This word used to be known as the smallest "something" in the house. In american media.)
