I knew of a woman with long blond curly hair who was an associate Professor at a small college working in the art department. Her specialty was ceramics. It was later at night after her last class ended she was making up clay for the morning classes. She was pouring dry mix into a machine that works something like a concrete mixer. It had large paddles that would spin mixing up the dry mix and water.

As she poured the dry mix in, her hair somehow got caught up in one of the paddles and pulled her head first into the mixer. After some evidence of struggle, she eventually lost consciousness and died from the head trauma. Her body wasn't discovered till the following morning with the machine still running. Ka chunk, ka chunk, ka chunk....

just kiddin! Just some story I heard. But no, go ahead and grow long hair. It looks good!
I remember a true story of a girl that was on one of those rides, not sure if it was a carnival ride but may have been. Her long hair was left flowing and it got caught in the ride somehow, maybe in the mechanics of it. So she was scalped, her hair and skin ripped off. Poor girl. I cant remember if it was a local or international story but from then on I always told people to tie their hair back when going to the local attraction.

What does the covering part mean?
Some churches have a tradition of using a hat, like my Bruderhoff friends, but I don't personally think it's talking about that. The covering through the whole chapter is hair.

Context of the chapter is below.
Please ignore the black numbers. That's an auto format numbering thing in the software. It's late and I'm getting tired, so will skip that fix.
  1. 4. Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoureth his head.
  2. 5 But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven.
  3. 6 For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered.
  4. 7 For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man.
  5. 8 For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man.
  6. 9 Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man.
  7. 10 For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels.
  8. 11 Nevertheless neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord.
  9. 12 For as the woman is of the man, even so is the man also by the woman; but all things of God.
  10. 13 Judge in yourselves: is it comely that a woman pray unto God uncovered?
  11. 14 Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?1
  12. 15 But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.

The comparison is men to women and covering vs uncovered. The key to understanding this part is the hair is God's natural covering for the women. Long hair is a glory to women and verses 5, 6 define that it is a covering. It goes into more details about the roles of women. I know that there are reasons why some women have short hair or lose their hair, but it's speaking in general terms of how God designed us.

oh you need to read the verses before those to find out WHO the Head of Man is and who the Head of Woman is

It explains that the Head of Man is Jesus. so when we pray we should not cover our Head JESUS

When women pray they should cover their head THEIR HUSBAND

Just Hair covering was a physical demonstration of something happening in the spititual jusdt like the Wafer and cordial are in church, they are not the body and blood but remind us what occured in the spiritual.

thoughts for you all to think on. I know many will argue LOL

Wow so interesting H&H. I didnt know that. Ive had shorter hairstyles in the past, eg number two buzz cut. But the lengths and styles changed over the years. I last trimmed my hair 2012 and then just let it grow long.

if you are skint you can grow your hair really long, cut it and sell it to wigmakers and make a pile of money from it. Apparently top price is paid for 'virgin hair' eg hair that has never been dyed.

You can always grow it back.

Anyway I thought it was Samson who was never meant to cut his hair. He took a Nazarite vow. Women dont need to take such vows I would think.

Yikes! That sounds horrific. I don't know how many times I have had my windows down while driving, and roll them up only to realize my hair caught in the window. There's a reason the women wore hankies over their hair back in the day, it wasn't just a fashion, or to keep their hair from being ruined in the weather.
