ChatGPT is based on AI we had in 2020, so it is more than 2 years behind the state of the art today.

There is a term called the singularity when AI is smarter than we are. I would argue that ChatGPT is already smarter than 50% of the people on this planet. I think that would be undeniable. Not only so but AI can be specially designed to be smarter than those in specialized industries (chess grandmaster, Go grandmaster, Jeopardy are the three we have seen, but they are all many years out of date).

My guess is that if we look at the current version of AI that is state of the Art it is smarter than 100% of people in most things. There might be a small minority, say 5% who are truly smarter than AI in their special field. But even if that is true, AI is rapidly gaining on those 5%.
I reckon. I don't know when it happened, but seeing ChatGPT, I think we've already entered into Skynet Terminator territory. Just hope I can get hold of some of those (oh-so-effective) laser guns before the robots are unleashed...

Food For Thought:

What AI does not have, and cannot have, is an entire range of various types of understanding called non-propositional knowledge.
It might be worth looking into that.
It's one of the big differences between being a human who reads books, and being a library full of books.

In computer logic they talk about these things in different terms... but they do talk about them.

God Bless you guys... even if a few of you are robots.
(And I have my suspicions.)
: )

I don't think an AI is going to replace lawyers but it could be handy for an attorney to dig through mountains of case files looking for files that are relevant to whatever case he is currently working on

If it saves time for a lawyer then it is replacing a lawyer. If one lawyer can do the job of two then you can replace 50% of lawyers. If three lawyers can do the job of four then you are replacing 25% of lawyers.

It's not replacing lawyers because you can't actually use it in court.

Not true. Every person has the right to defend themself and there is no law against using the internet and computer to prepare your case.

Suppose you are a lawyer with your own practice, or a big law firm with a hundred lawyers, or a judge, or a prosecutor, or a government lawyer, you may think you don't need AI but wouldn't you want to check what the AI says just in case it brings up something you hadn't seen or thought of? I think the answer is yes, how embarrassing to charge someone $1,000 an hour and then for them to find out they could have gotten better advice from AI for $100.

Now if you are paying for the AI subscription and using it on every case don't you think that it will replace lawyers and legal assistants and para legals? One lawyer with AI can do the job of a lawyer with two legal assistants. This means he can cut his fee in half. The only way you can compete is if you also use the AI.

You can use it to prepare for your case but you can't bring a laptop into the courtroom

Unless you are an actual attorney and you try to represent yourself in court, you're going to jail. So AI will not be replacing attorneys anytime soon

You do not understand the concept of replace, got it. I guess it is just too difficult for you to grasp that if 25 attorneys can do the work of 100 attorneys you have replaced 75 attorneys.

Also your claim that you can't use a laptop during the trial is absurd. Are you familiar with court cases that were held on Zoom?

Baloney. Show me your source that only licensed attorney's have the right to represent themselves in court.

I didn't say you don't have the right to represent yourself but if you do, you're probably going to jail
There's a old saying.... Anyone who represents himself in court has a fool for a client

That's idiotic. Do I need to be a CPA to do my tax return? They don't send people to jail for traffic tickets or civil court. Even a fool if he keeps quiet will not appear to be a fool

Not talking about civil or traffic court. I'm talking about criminal court.
However, if you're being sued for millions, I would recommend hiring an attorney
Same thing if you're accused of a crime.

Lawyers provide legal advice and counsel -- that could easily be done by AI.

Lawyers research and gather information -- that could easily be done by AI

Lawyers draw up legal documents related to divorces, wills, contracts and real estate transactions -- that could easily be done by AI.

By some estimates 90-95% of civil suits settle before going to court. All of that could be handled by AI.

97% of criminal cases are plea bargained. That also can easily be handled by AI.

General rule of thumb is that for every hour in court the lawyer spends 24 hours out of court. Again, AI could easily reduce that to 4 hours. That means your labor drops from 25 hours to 5 hours, or 20%.
