LOVE Theocracy, but they're very slow at making new albums. Would really like to find a similar band that doesn't have that 80s metal sound. Most of the prog rock Christian bands can't seem to shake that sound, especially the "sha na na na" ending.

I can't stand that RAH RAH metal where you can't understand a word they're yelling. With Theocracy, you can understand what they're saying and their polyphonic vocals and instruments are awesome.
have you heard of Signum Regis?

Not a big prog rock fan, but to me prog rock, by it's nature, has an 80s sound to it. I can't imagine a prog rock band that didn't sound 80s in some way or another.

In that case, perhaps prog rock isn't what I'm looking for. Not sure. Love metal with background vocals and instruments that go in different directions but compliment each other. I think the word is "polyphonic" but not sure.

Hmm... i was never much of a musician, so i'm not entirely familiar with how that term relates to specific sounds through bands.
Perhaps name some bands that fit into what you're looking for. Musical interpretation can vary if you go solely by your interpretation of a sound. Presenting the actual sound makes it less subjective and more concrete and may yield a better response. What you hear as 80s sounding, and what i hear, may not line up entirely.

It's hard to explain what I hear in the 80s sound. It almost has a "sha-na-na-na" sound to its ending. Wish I could do better. As for Theocracy, you'll have lead vocals going in one direction and the background vocals going in another direction, and the instruments sometimes do the same. (I think it's called melody but I don't know.) All of this with a metal sound. I love it. As a kid, we sang row your boat in groups starting at different times and it sounded awesome to me. Maybe I'm just confused.

one of the best of Christian 90's hard rock - but the music ages well IMO. haven't been active for a while, but are hinting at releasing a new album in a few months. if they're new to you, plenty of material to catch up on in the meantime, clean vocals, and i think they may some of that harmony & counterpoint you're talking about, without any of the 80's cheese.

I love Stavesacre and Signum Regis.

Try Darkwater out. They are a bit less 80's ish while still having the prog/power metal sound.
