Water baptism was important, not anymore but if it removes loose dirt then it is important.
Its significance was as defined in the prophesies of preparing the Lords way, making His path straight and how we are told by John himself; it was meant to identify the Messiah (John 1).
After John, there's no need to continue with this practice because the Messiah is not being identified all over again and the hearts of the people are not being readied for the coming Messiah again.
John also used it as a method to bring people to him so that he can pass the message "after me comes...".
We are 2000 years into "after me ..." era, so need for water baptism.
