Why can’t i speak in tongues as a Christian
If you want to speak in tongues for the purpose of bringing God glory you can ask Him for that.

Don’t be alarmed, though, many Christians don’t have any of the greater spiritual gifts. They sure are a blessing, but come with great humility and responsibility. I have never spoken in tongues that I’m aware of, but I can prophesy and I’ve laid hands before. I’ve asked for tongues, but I apparently don’t need it as of right now.

Thanks…but the scripture says you need to be baptized with the Holy Spirit for you to speak in tongues so does it mean I am not yet baptized with the Holy Spirit
Baptism in the Holy Spirit is the same as being filled with the Spirit. It gives you strength to live for God in holiness. You can ask each time you pray. There is not a feeling.

Exodus 31:3
I have filled Bezalel with the Spirit of God—I have given him the skill and knowledge to do all kinds of things.

But the Lord’s Spirit has filled me with power, goodness, and strength. So I can tell Jacob about his crimes, and so I can tell Israel about his sins!

Zechariah 12:10
I will fill David’s family and the people living in Jerusalem with a Spirit of kindness and mercy. They will look to me, the one they stabbed, and they will be very sad. “Here is my servant, the one I have chosen. He is the one I love, and I am very pleased with him. I will fill him with my Spirit, and he will bring justice to the nations.

Not all baptized with the Holy Spirit comes with tongues. Don't fall into that guilt trap. You are better off leaving that church and go to one that emphasizes all the gifts.

Here is a text rarely preached upon friend, sister:

2 Peter 1

Douay-Rheims 1899 American Edition

1 Simon Peter, servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained equal faith with us in the justice of our God and Saviour Jesus Christ.
2 Grace to you and peace be accomplished in the knowledge of God and of Christ Jesus our Lord:
3 As all things of his divine power which appertain to life and godliness, are given us, through the knowledge of him who hath called us by his own proper glory and virtue.
4 By whom he hath given us most great and precious promises: that by these you may be made partakers of the divine nature: flying the corruption of that concupiscence which is in the world.
5 And you, employing all care, minister in your faith, virtue; and in virtue, knowledge;
6 And in knowledge, abstinence; and in abstinence, patience; and in patience, godliness;
7 And in godliness, love of brotherhood; and in love of brotherhood, charity.
8 For if these things be with you and abound, they will make you to be neither empty nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
9 For he that hath not these things with him, is blind, and groping, having forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.
10 Wherefore, brethren, labour the more, that by good works you may make sure your calling and election. For doing these things, you shall not sin at any time.
11 For so an entrance shall be ministered to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
12 For which cause I will begin to put you always in remembrance of these things: though indeed you know them, and are confirmed in the present truth.
13 But I think it meet as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance.
14 Being assured that the laying away of this my tabernacle is at hand, according as our Lord Jesus Christ also hath signified to me.
15 And I will endeavour, that you frequently have after my decease, whereby you may keep a memory of these things.
16 For we have not by following artificial fables, made known to you the power, and presence of our Lord Jesus Christ; but we were eyewitnesses of his greatness.
17 For he received from God the Father, honour and glory: this voice coming down to him from the excellent glory: This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.
18 And this voice we heard brought from heaven, when we were with him in the holy mount.
19 And we have the more firm prophetical word: whereunto you do well to attend, as to a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:
20 Understanding this first, that no prophecy of scripture is made by private interpretation.
21 For prophecy came not by the will of man at any time: but the holy men of God spoke, inspired by the Holy Ghost.

Thank you…but also the scripture says that you

Please read Act 19 verse 6
Stop taking Scripture out of context sister friend.

In context your proof text speaks of those who were already saved and indwelt with the Holy Spirit. Your text speaks of a limited group who spoke in tongues, it is not an universal event for all time.

Acts 18
24 Now a certain Jew, named Apollo, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man, came to Ephesus, one mighty in the scriptures.

25 This man was instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in spirit, spoke, and taught diligently the things that are of Jesus, knowing only the baptism of John.

26 This man therefore began to speak boldly in the synagogue. Whom when Priscilla and Aquila had heard, they took him to them, and expounded to him the way of the Lord more diligently.

27 And whereas he was desirous to go to Achaia, the brethren exhorting, wrote to the disciples to receive him. Who, when he was come, helped them much who had believed.

28 For with much vigour he convinced the Jews openly, shewing by the scriptures, that Jesus is the Christ.

19 And it came to pass, while Apollo was at Corinth, that Paul having passed through the upper coasts, came to Ephesus, and found certain disciples.

2 And he said to them: Have you received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? But they said to him: We have not so much as heard whether there be a Holy Ghost.

3 And he said: In what then were you baptized? Who said: In John's baptism.

4 Then Paul said: John baptized the people with the baptism of penance, saying: That they should believe in him who was to come after him, that is to say, in Jesus.

5 Having heard these things, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

Leave the oneness cult if it is United Pentecostal. You don't need false teachings or bad guilt trips.

hmmm......better to have a foundation before you try to add to the house

what I understand from scripture, is that it is God who decides who gets what; but yes of course we can pray but better with understanding that just 'I want the big one' :giggle:

3 For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. 4 For as in one body we have many members,5 and the members do not all have the same function, 5 so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. 6 Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; 7 if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; 8 the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.
Romans 12: 3-8

for myself, I did ask to receive the gift of tongues once I understood about it, having grown up in a church that did not think it wise to speak in tongues even though they thought it might be real

after that, once I got around some a experienced the inside workings of other denoms, I prayed for discernment

IMO, that is just about one of the most, if not the most, needed gift today in the body...and having discernment, the wisdom and understanding on how to used it

after all, wisdom does cry out
Tongues is the least of the gifts, not the most important in anyway.

Not sure which translation you are using, but there is a huge difference between "penance" (a Catholic concept) and biblical "repentance".

Google Linguists language experts studies on tongues
here it is for you link https://www.google.com/search?q=lin...Q2SAQQwLjEzmAEAoAEBwAEB&sclient=gws-wiz-books

Growing up my first languages where charkee, Hebrew and Yiddish. I visited Pentecostal Churches, people said, they heard Hebrew spoken. I asked if they speak or read Hebrew? All said, NO. I pointed out I know Hebrew and not a word of it was spoken there. I have also, got 26 friends together including language experts and we visited churches and listened to recordings, including online videoes. Not one person spoke in a langues of anykind. Also, it is my experience that the most unholy people are Charismatics and Pentecostals. They tend to be child like and self centered.

Language experts, have studies tongues too and reached the same conclusions.

I personally recorded what I knew to be Satanic and Pagan worship Services. And, recorded messages myself in the langues I know along with many others. We all typed out what each means. We have also spoken those messages in both Pentecostal and Charismation Services included Oneness Cults. No one else was speaking when we spoke. No one came close to giving the correct interpretation or meaning. One time, I spoke my shoping list in a service --- no one got it right either. Again if someone practices priming the pump nonsense run for the hills. You do not need the false guilt trips laid on you.

oh my! where would you like to start? ANY gift from God would surely be welcome I would expect

smh
That is true, but tongues is the least of them and least important.
I believe based on Eph 4 believes all the gifts are still in operation.
All the testing of tongues including my own testing has shown them to be of the flesh. I say of the flesh because the ethics of those were exammed too. I am assuming you are seeking to live a holy life for our Lord.
