Baptism by water is a good work. But good works do not save anyone. Only the circumcision of the heart. By the gift of faith we respond with belief. Belief in Christ to receive God's grace for the forgiveness of sin. We then are motivated to do good works including the outward expression of water baptism.

Ephesians 2:8-10
8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Romans 4:5
5 And to the one who does not work but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness,

Water baptism was not an OT law. It was initiated by John the Baptist and later modified to include the name of the Lord Jesus (after His death, burial and resurrection) on the Day of Pentecost as prophesied by Jesus in Luke 24:47. (Acts 2:38)
Baptism was initiated by John the Baptist? That's news to me.

Although the term "baptism" is not used to describe the Jewish rituals, the purification rites in Halakha, Jewish law and tradition, called tvilah, have some similarity to baptism, and the two have been linked. The tvilah is the act of immersion in naturally-sourced water, called a mikva. In the past Hebrew Bible and other Jewish texts, immersion in water for ritual purification was established for restoration to a condition of "ritual purity" in specific circumstances. For example, Jews who (according to the Law of Moses) became ritually defiled by contact with a corpse had to use the mikvah before being allowed to participate in the Holy Temple. source

Wrong, wrong and more wrong.
You seriously need to study scripture.

Allow us to help you...start with these one at a time and give us your explanation why they do not require baptism as a commandment;

Baptism is Required

Peter 3: 21.... whereunto even baptism doth also now save us...

John 3:5 .......Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

Acts 2;38-....Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Acts 22;16... And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.

Galations 3:26...... For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.
27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

KJV Marrk 16:16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

KJV Matthew 3:14... But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? 15. Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now, for thus it becometh us to fulfil all rightesousness. Then He suffered Him.

KJV Matthew 28:19..... Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:.

Acts 8:12-18: But when they believed Philip as he preached the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized.

John 3; 22 After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judaea; and there he tarried with them, and baptized.
23 And John also was baptizing in Aenon near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized.

Quote from Billy Graham that is note worthy;
....Also, to clarify I did not say remission of sin takes place at repentance. Scripture makes it clear that it occurs upon obedience to water baptism in the name of the Lord Jesus. Each is a step of faith, along with receiving the Holy Ghost, in the process of one's spiritual rebirth

.."Paul explains the doctrinal significance of what occurs when one is baptized. His explanation is found in his letter to those who had already been obedient to the command.

Paul tells the Roman Christians what actually occurred when they were/are baptized; they were baptized into His death. Being buried with Jesus into His death resulted in their sin being destroyed.

Even though Paul explains this concept, the NEW AGE RELIGION TEACHING is......... that water baptism is nothing other than a mere public display.......... And that is so far removed from the truth.

Keep in mind that Satan knows if he can continue to perpetuate that lie ...... he can keep people from entering the kingdom of God. Thus He has proven scripture which says ...in the end times there will be ...great delusions.....they are here.

Conclusion....teaching that baptism is not necessary is violation of Rev. 22;19.... And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. 20 He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus. (Also two other books of the Bible).

Let's remember Jesus was already sinless and righteous. But His baptism was symbolic as the Lamb of God. John's family were accustomed to temple sacrifices. One of the duties of the priests in the Old Testament was to present the sacrifices before the Lord. Jesus being prepared as the ultimate sacrifice.

John 1:29
New International Version

29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

Matthew 3:11 (ESV)
11 “I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
Wrong.
There is no relation to baptism under the NT and the OT.
Under the OT animal sacrifice was in play for forgiveness....not baptism.

In the Torah baptism was an exclusive ritual for the priests, John the Baptist extended that to everyone. It symbolizes rebirth. When Nicodemus questioned how could an old man go back into his mother's womb and be born again, that's not him being ignorant or sarcastic, that's a subtle reference of Gen 38:27-30. Tamar had twins with Judah, her father in law, when she was in labor, it was a very strange, unusual birth - Zerah stuck his arm out, midwife tied a scarlet cord on the wrist, then surprisingly, he drew his arm back, his brother Perez came out first, and he followed. Therefore Perez was named Perez - "breakthrough", and he was named Zerah - "arise". According to one rabbi, although Perez was in Jesus's geneology, Zerah's strange birth symbolizes the two comings of Jesus. First time only a hand came out, next time the full body.

Please read again 1 Peter ch3

the Apostle Peter never says water baptism saves us but the Apostle does state the 3 elements that, in fact, does save us:
#1.) 3:18 "For Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God.
#2.) 3:18 "He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit" = Death & Resurrection of Christ
#3.) FAITH 3:21 - "not the removal of dirt from the body, but the pledge of a clear conscience toward Godthrough the resurrection of Jesus Christ,

the Apostle Paul confirms the words of the Apostle Peter: Romans 10:8
The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith which we preach):
that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

Water baptism is outward, cannot save us for Salvation is inward of the Spirit, the Word and the circumcision of the heart in man.

KEEP in mind this: we believe, and in faith, water baptise(complete submersion) of the man/woman who has recieved the Call of the Father to come to Christ in faith and not of works/religion/ritual/membership.
Hi Brother David.

1. Regarding 1 Pet 3:21, it says Baptism saves us twice: "Baptism now saves you ... It [Baptism] saves you through the Resurrection of Jesus Christ". (1 Pet 3:21)

If Baptism were merely symbolic, Apostle Peter/St. Peter would never have said this. He would have said something like "Baptism is just an empty symbol that can never save you". But he didn't.

2. Let's discuss other verses, to study all of Scripture on Baptism together. Can you explain Acts 22:16. Apostle Paul/St. Paul, relating what Ananias told him, declares: "16 And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord." (Acts 22:16).

See how clear it is. St. Paul is telling all non-Christians, if you want your sins washed away, hurry to be baptized, to wash away your sins. Baptism saves us by the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, St. Peter said. Baptism washes away sins, St. Paul confirms. God confirms His Word by multiple witnesses according to Scripture. He Himself had said "whoever believes and is baptized will be saved" (Mar 16:16).

3. Right from the preaching of John the Baptist, Baptism is always introduced to us in the Holy Scriptures as being for the Remission of sins. What does that means? That means Sins are Washed Away in Baptism, including the Original Sin. Hear John the Baptist:

Mark 1:4 "4John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins."

On the Day of Pentecost, St. Peter confirms and strengthens this, saying one will receive both remission of sins and the Indwelling Grace of the Holy Spirit when one repents and is Baptized in the Name of the Lord. Baptism now saves us by the Resurrection of Christ.

"38Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. 39For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. 40And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation. 41Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls." (Acts 2:38-41). Baptism completed their conversion to Christ and they were numbered among Christ's faithful after being baptized. In Galatians, St. Paul shows us Baptism and Faith are closely linked, that we become the children of God in Baptism by faith in Christ Jesus. The necessity of Baptism is the necessity of Faith in Christ. The two are not opposed to each other but united.

God Bless,
N. Xavier.

Sounds strikingly similar to the priesthood being extended to everyone! :D

The curtain was torn. Jesus' baptism fulfilled all righteousness :)

PS~ thank you for that little "story" (y)

This is the verse in Galatians 3 I was referring to above.

"Sons Through Faith in Christ

26For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. 27For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. 29And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise."

How are we the children of God? By faith in Christ Jesus. When did this happen? When we were Baptized. How? Because as many as have been baptized have put on Jesus Christ. So, by faith, and in Baptism, we become the children of God, and heirs to the Promise.

Martin Luther taught both Baptismal Regeneration and Faith Alone. Baptismal Regeneration is also taught in the Nicene Creed, and is the historical Creedal Faith of the Apostolic Church: "We confess One Baptism for the Remission of Sins". This Remission of Sins takes place by faith in Christ, but it takes place in Baptism, according to Scripture and the witness of the Apostles and Prophets.

Wiki: "Lutheranism[edit source]
Main article: Lutheran sacraments
Martin Luther elaborated the regeneration and the saving power in Baptism:

It is not the water that does them, indeed, but the Word of God which is in and with the water, and faith which trusts this Word of God in the water... [14]
Lutheranism affirms baptismal regeneration,[15][16][17] believing that baptism is a means of grace, instead of human works, through which God creates and strengthens faith.[18][19][20]

Lutherans believe that the Bible shows how Christians are connected through baptism with Christ and the new life Christ's work gives us.[20][21] The Bible's author uses the picture of cleansing to show how baptism applies Jesus Christ's saving work to receivers.[22] Lutherans believe that the Bible depicts the connection between faith, baptism and being clothed with Christ. The result of the connection is that Christians are children of God with all the rights, privileges and blessings that go with that status.[23] Lutherans state that in his letter to Titus, Paul introduces the work of the Holy Spirit, again linking baptism, new life, and the blessings Jesus has won.[24] Lutheran scholars concluded that in the Scripture:

we see that baptism is not a mere symbol of what God does for us. It is not just a ceremony done to connect someone outwardly to a church. God is at work through baptism. He is connecting us to Christ's death and resurrection. All of his mercy and grace are directed at the person being baptized. The Holy Spirit is giving the new life of faith in Jesus. The results are amazing: buried and raised with Christ; clothed with Christ; washed clean of sin; a forgiven, believing child of God; an heir of eternal life.

Biblically speaking, Jesus did not have the Holy Spirit upon Him until after He came up out of the water of His water baptism.

Jesus said water baptism is "fulfilling all righteousness."
Biblicaly speaking you need to read/study John chapter 1 - Peace and have a good day

Thank you for your rewarding reply,
As a former RCC obedient member, i can personally testify to the words of Christ and the TRUE Apostles who say: "the flesh profits nothing and have no confidence in the flesh and we are not redeemed by outward acts that cannot cleanse the inward soul/heart/mind/spirit of a man.

Every beautiful scripture you post is a Testament to FAITH in Christ Jesus. Water baptism cannot stand alone and has no merit before the FATHER - but obedience does and this is why i was Baptized TWICE = once in water and then again in the HOLY SPIRIT.
The first baptism = outward
The Eternal Baptism = Inward and full of Glory, Truth and Holiness

Peace

Okay whatever. Agreed to disagree then. I’m not going to keep trying to help you or bother replying to your argumentative comments.
No offense, but I don't need help. You are stuck on a verse that has NO historical reference point and you are trying to make a Bible doctrine out of it. Yet, there is NO OTHER verse that says what you think 1 Cor 15:29 means. In fact, that verse doesn't even say what you claim it says.

Nor will I read them as they aren’t useful and not valuable to me.
That is your business. What I do is point out what isn't in the Bible.

We do not teach a legalistic gospel. For example,

Acts 22:16
16 And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized and wash your sins away, calling on his name.’

What washes away your sins? Water or the blood of Christ?

Titus 3:5
He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit,
