Hi brother! I really appreciate the sidetrack we took down the Jewish festival and prophecy road yesterday, and I may have to dabble in some more of that today, too.
But, I want to spend a little time with Jesus at the Feast of Tabernacles in John chapter 7, so going back to the verse below and speculate why Jesus shared into during that Feast is interesting:
John 7:24
New King James Version
24 Do not judge according to appearance, but
judge with righteous judgment.
When Jesus went up into the temple to teach during the Feast, the Jews were puzzled how this simple carpenter from the country village of Nazareth who had little to no formal education could be such a powerful teacher. On top of that, how could he heal people, and why does he do it on the Sabbath? They even accused Jesus of having a demon (v. 20).
Here's what Jesus had to say to all of this, and He just totally and rhetorically destroys their criticisms:
21 "Jesus answered and said to them, “I did one work, and you all marvel. 22 Moses therefore gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath. 23
If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath, so that the law of Moses should not be broken, are you angry with Me because I made a man completely well on the Sabbath? 24 Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.”
So, it's ok to perform circumcisions (ouch!) on the Sabbath, but it's not ok to heal people?
Jesus also tells us that we should judge not, but that is referring more to a condemning type of judgement. What Jesus is talking about in verse 24 is not judging based on appearance alone--look at the big picture. Righteous judgement comes from God and His Word. And, judgement is a key theme of the millennium. Jesus Christ as King will execute righteous judgement (justice) during His reign!
