Can someone explain to me the uniqueness of this gift of speaking in tongues which most congregations in my neighbourhood insist on acquiring? Is it in any way superior to or more edifying than other gifts?
The benefit of tongues is the exact same as praying in your own language. This is the way Jesus prayed so I'm sure it's plenty good enough

the prayer language gift is still available to pray as Holy Spirit gives utterance. A very valuable and precious gift for doing His Will.

The Apostles were given this gift in order to prove to the Jewish people they were not fakes. This was only one of the many gifts given. All to prove the apostles were in fact the originals.

Having said that, there are Gifts given to people today. All kinds of gifts. While the Gift of Tongues "MAY BE" one of them, it is not the gift that is so widely seen in certain denominations of the Christian religion.

The Gifts of tongues was used to speak to many different languages at one time. Today, it is giberish in most cases and is not biblical.

Biblical definition of Tongues = a Specific language.

Blade
What do you think about the instances after Acts 2 in which believers spoke in tongues? These aren't identified as specific languages.

Do you want something to support it? If so, you will have to go to somebody that thinks if is the REAL McCOY.

If you wan a DETAILED report on WHY it is a COUNTERFEIT of the REAL McCOY, I did a lengthy report on it back in the 80's that is VERY EYE OPENING. If I remember right it is at least 12 pages on a word doc, and every thing is still pertinent and relevant to today. It is in my computer files somewhere, and I will be happy to share it here, BUT I DO NOT WANT TO ARGUE WITH NOBODY. However if you want it posted here, I will have to break it up into 5 posts to make it fit. It was the LEAST important gift when it was in it's heyday, in the 1 Century, and it ceased, and today's manifestation is a complete COUNTERFEIT. It is your CALL, but I will not respond to anyone who want to argue the point, so it is for INFORMATION only. I have been in so many arguments over the years, and I DO NOT CARE TO GO THROUGH YET ANOTHER.

My essay is called:
The Gift of Tongues

A non-charismatic understanding

I was saved in July 1962. Was Baptized in the Holy Spirit the moment I was saved. The Holy Spirit has been present with me every moment sense that day.
I have never spoken in tongues. Have never had a desire to. Have never needed to. Have never seen the purpose.
I have never missed any blessing.

we really don't know if we have received less than what He wants to give us until we get up there. We tend to think between good and bad, He thinks bad- good- best.
Scripture is clear that Holy Spirit guides the tongue to pray what we need to pray according to His desires.
Unsaved don't know what they are missing, saved carnal Christians don't know what they are missing, if and when we become spiritual Christians we learn and grow and do not wish to go back.
There are unsaved, newly saved, carnal Christians, and then spiritual Christians, He will grow us as much as we want to grow.

Non of the so called tongues spoken today is real- for the kingdom of God doesn't come with observable signs so that people can say, "look, here it is or there it goes.." or "you see the people at corner blabbering a new language, they belong to the kingdom.."
NO NO NO.

All these things ceased in the 1st century- we are not only talking about tongues, the raising of the dead/ the laying of hands to heal/ the doing of miracles/ the interpretation of tongues, all of them.

Not that i'm guessing, i know what i'm saying, it is all about a timeline, there's times and seasons for everything as prophesied by Daniel. It is at the time of disciples/Apostles/1st century church that the antichrist was being held so that the mandate of spreading the gospel to all nations (before the end times) could be achieved. At that time, all signs and wonders were genuine and they helped the people (Jews & Gentiles) to believe the gospel. The Apostles and disciples under the leadership of Paul & Peter were the two witnesses that Revelation talks about. As long as they witnessed, nothing could touch them hence the miraculous escapes from prisons. Until they finished witnessing then the antichrist takes reign of the world and the first order of events was to pursue them and kill them, then from that point on every sign and wonder has been fake because antichrist comes to deceive.

2 Thess 2:5 Don’t you remember that when I was with you I used to tell you these things? 6And now you know what is holding him back, so that he may be revealed at the proper time. 7For the secret power of lawlessness is already at work; but the one who now holds it back will continue to do so till he is taken out of the way. 8And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will overthrow with the breath of his mouth and destroy by the splendor of his coming. 9The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with how Satan works. He will use all sorts of displays of power through signs and wonders that serve the lie, 10and all the ways that wickedness deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. 11For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie 12and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.

Rev 13:11 Then I saw a second beast, coming out of the earth. It had two horns like a lamb, but it spoke like a dragon. 12It exercised all the authority of the first beast on its behalf, and made the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast, whose fatal wound had been healed. 13And it performed great signs, even causing fire to come down from heaven to the earth in full view of the people. 14Because of the signs it was given power to perform on behalf of the first beast, it deceived the inhabitants of the earth. It ordered them to set up an image in honor of the beast who was wounded by the sword and yet lived.

And i'm not speaking as an outsider, i 'spoke in tongues' for some time and all along i thought it was God but it is all fake. Let no body say there are some genuine tongues and some fake tongues. If two men speaks incomprehensible words, there;s absolutely no reason to say one is genuine and the other is fake based on the church they come from or based on how well they behave- that's why i say it is all fake.
The signs and wonders ceased because the antichrist took reign and there can not be a genuine sign here and a fake sign there, it would bring confusion and people would have excuses, it is all fake now so that whoever believes in them have no excuse and God gives them a powerful delusion because they hated truth.
No you do not know what your saying. But I think it is time for you to go. You do not know anything about this topic and to continue to suggest the anti-christ has full rein . Wrong .

I would recommend anyone who enters a so called charismatic church or that place where people start to utter gibberish and writhe and roll around, leave! Because that is not of God. And it is not the scriptural teaching as pertains to language either. Acts 2

γλῶσσα (glōssa)
Strong: G1100
GK: G1185
the tongue, Mk. 7:33, 35, et al.; meton. speech, talk, 1 Jn. 3:18; a tongue, language, Acts 2:11; 1 Cor. 13:1, et al.; meton. a language not proper to a speaker, a gift or faculty of such language, Mk. 16:17; 1 Cor. 14:13, 14, 26, et al.; from Hebrew, a nation, as defined by its language, Rev. 5:9, et al.; lit. a tongue-shaped flail, Acts 2:3

The ability to speak foreign languages, tongue, was bestowed upon those charged to fulfill the Great Commission when they were gathered in the upper room. The Holy Spirit descended and gifted those men and women with the ability to speak in foreign languages. And this was so as to speak to unbelievers and lead them to repentance and salvation. Acts 19

I'm i the only one going/getting banned or everyone else who thinks the tongues today are fake?
If it is only me, don't you think it's a little discriminating?

What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with
the understanding also.
1Corinthians 14:15
For he that speaks in an unknown tongue speaks not unto men, but unto God: for no man understands him; howbeit in the spirit he speaks mysteries.
1Corinthians 14:2
Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;
Ephesians 6:18
But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost,
Jude 1:20
(CEV) In certain ways we are weak, but the Spirit is here to help us. For example, when we don't know what to pray for, the Spirit prays for us in ways that cannot be put into words.

Great and an uplifting testimony. I have also been healed from diabetes but i just don't believe that there are people with the gift of healing today. God heals, just like that and we give praise.
Those two testimonies contain a lot more substance than merely a healing.
Again you are being blind and disingenuous.

Tongues means, language. But the people of ancient times used the word tongues. Whereas today we would use, language. It was a manner of speaking a language the Apostles did not already know. And that's why God's Holy Spirit gifted them with that capacity. So that in bringing the Good News into all the world, they could speak the languages of the people they'd find across the globe.

Tongues do happen today. But if it is gibberish, it's fake. If it is a language that is not understood, it is fake. This is a great short instructional video that utilizes scripture to inform about true Tongues.

The video has some interesting points however, pray without ceasing can very well mean your very life is one of prayer. This is an application. In addition, the word gibberish is not in the context of tongues or found in the bible.

The biblical context for tongues is

  • The organ in the mouth
  • Language of a person, culture , or nation
  • the language or dialect used by a particular people distinct from that of other nations
This is the natural biblical understand of “Tongues” in the Old and New Testament

the term “ Speaking in tongues “. Or in Languages contextually is in direct response to what the Holy Spirit is doing and man who the Holy Spirit enabled to speak.
