Should we go by science or the bible? Here are some thoughts about this.

We know the bible is always correct, for it is inspired by the creator of us and our world, and we know that science is sometimes incorrect because we have seen them change their mind at times. However, scripture is inspired by the Lord, but it is men who put those thoughts into words that he understood at the time he wrote them down. It could be that it is not correct because his understanding was incorrect.

Also, there are times that the Lord’s ways were explained by using a current saying, like we say don’t burn your bridges. We don't mean that as literal burning a bridge. An illustration of this is to tell of God wanting us to be just by saying “an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth”. The Lord was not telling us to take out eyes, the Lord was telling us to be just.

Another misunderstanding of scripture was centuries ago when people thought the Lord told us the earth was square. This was based on the scripture telling of the “four corners of the earth”. There was a cry of outrage when science proved the earth was round.
Blik,

Agreed. I believe one issue, which you referred to above, is when well-meaning Christians misunderstand what God was intending to do in a scripture text. For example, IMO God was not intending to give specific details about just how He created the world in Genesis 1 & 2. I believe that God used Moses to deal with theological issues there more so than scientific ones. The Israelites had been slaves in Egypt for about 400 years. They had been indoctrinated and influenced by Egyptian culture, in particular their theology.

Most will probably quickly agree with this - because, they understand just-how-possible 400 years of 'indoctrination' can have an effect on a people's thinking.

However - tell them that we have all been 'indoctrinated' for 400 years by modern science (which has been currupted by the devil) - and, they will put their fingers in their ears and say "lalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalala"...

Hmmmm - I wonder why that is...???

Answer: Because, the devil has "trained them well" - through the 'indoctrination' of modern science - to use the modern-science-method of interpreting scripture.

The number one "rule" of modern science is:

"Don't ever question modern science."

And - when people decide to believe and trust modern science more-so than their bible - they wrap their interpretation of the bible around modern science - instead of believing and trusting what their bible says - and inquiring why what-modern-science-posits does not agree with what their bible says.

The age of the earth? The bible tells the truth. Modern science does not.

The Gap Theory? What does the bible really actually say?

Evolution? :rolleyes:Modern science lies.

People are doing things backwards. They should be studying their bible to understand what it is actually saying - without regard to what modern science (or anything else) is saying.

Every Christian needs to learn how to "suspend" everything the world has taught them while they study a particular passage of scripture - so that the 'indoctrination' they have "received" all of their life does not interfere with their understanding and interpretation of the scriptures.

Because - "I promise you" - it will and it does...

Another way to look at science is to see if science can help us understand what scripture is really saying. That was done when science found the earth was a sphere and not a square. That told them what scripture was really saying about the four corners of the earth.

Scientist did not create the earth, and do not have the knowledge the Lord has. When anyone thinks this, it leads to some glaring untruths.

Gary,

Thx for your thoughts. Just a suggestion, we should not assume that anyone (perhaps a committed believer) who holds to an older earth/universe than just say 6000 - 10,000 years or so Is disrespecting the Bible. Perhaps they see the interpretation of it a bit differently in places than others.

Amen!! Preach it, brother!

C'mon people, Lets git out of Scofield and Darwin days and get up to speed. Intelligent design is a fact and mature creation logically follows. Its a "no-duh" thing. That is why modern atheist-science is looking so hard for "Super Aliens".

It is one thing to utilize scientific study to confirm what scripture says. It is another thing altogether to utilize it to deny what scripture says.

Think about it...

'found'??? I have seen no such proof - only a-whole-lotta conjecture-and-supposition.

That told them what scripture was really saying about the four corners of the earth.
This statement comes directly out of something I was talking about - using science to interpret scripture.

I am "all for" committed believers. Praise the Lord!

I respect the right of everyone to believe what they will - I am not trying to "knock" anyone - I am only "telling it like I see it" - stating what I believe.

I am certainly not saying that someone "has disrespect for the Bible" if they don't believe exactly as I do. Don't even think that. And, if you have, then you must have "read that into" something I said.

Gary, you still have not dealt with the Sydney Opera House pictures. Please explain how the sun can cast a shadow anywhere northward from a structure that is 33 degrees South of the equator.

I will "deal with it" when I get the full-extent of my life back --- until then - you will just have to be patient!!!

How many times do I have to tell you this???

This old slow laptop I am using ... it is not worth even attempting to do many things on the internet. There are only a handful of web sites that I even visit on a regular basis (CC being one of them). Many web sites that I would like to visit on a more regular basis render so badly that it is just not worth it. And, the "script from hell" that is running on this site often makes me wonder if visiting this site is worth it.

I am learning how to deal with it - but, I have to be very diligent - or, it will lock up my computer. (by "beating the CPU to death" until it just 'hangs')

I don't dare to not minimize the window containing the thread I am currently reading - especially if it has a lot of 'media' in it - if I should go to the kitchen or bathroom for even a few minutes. Otherwise, I risk hanging the computer. I have seen it hang while I was just reading a thread - only because the script [actively] ran long enough to "get carried away" and "ramp up" until it hung the computer. If I let it get past a certain point - "that's it" - it hangs, and I have to reboot the computer.

On a regular basis, I have to minimize the window of the thread I am reading and wait for the sound of the CPU fan to drop in frequency - and then, open the window back up and read some more. How long I can go before repeating this procedure generally seems to depend on how much 'media' is on the page I am looking at. Sometimes, the GIFs in peoples signatures seem to be enough to wreak havoc with my thread-reading.

Some of the 'humor' threads - that have a lot of 'media' in them - are often nearly impossible. And, the absolute majority of the 'media' don't even render at all. I often see what looks like a completely empty post with a bunch of 'likes' at the bottom. So, I know that someone posted a picture or video that simply would not render in my browser. I have to get my handheld device (my phone) to look at any-and-every video in any-and-every thread - and the majority of the pictures that are posted.

I sometimes spend hours to write a single post. I don't remember exactly what time it was when I started writing this post. But - I am pretty sure it was not too-very-long after you posted what is in the quote above. I have been working non-stop since that time to get this post written.

I don't think you realize what I have to deal with sometimes when trying to post to a thread on here.

When I get my computer situation "back to normal", you can rest assured that - Lord willing - I will "pick up where I left off" in my research concerning the Sydney Opera House pictures.

What you do not realize - because you do not see it - is - from time to time - I do sit and look at the pictures and "ponder it some more"...

I do what I can - which, for now, is not much.

So - "chill out brother" - and, try to be patient.

I will get to it when I can - and, that is the best you can hope for...

Can you locate something called msconfig? I don't know what windows version you are using but search for it on computer. Once that is open you will see a tab called START UP, click that on the left you will see squares either with a check mark or not. Checkmarks means that program starts when your computer does and often that isn't needed so UNCHECK boxes that you think you don't need. This does not delete anything, it just tells that program to not start automatically. This is completely reverse\able if you uncheck something when it's better to be checked. This is a basic and very effective way to TUNE UP a computer. A restart will be needed for the effects to take place.

Things you want checked are anti-virus and any programs you normally use. Let me know if you have more questions.

Thank you for your response - I appreciate it when folks try to help other folks. I try to do the same when I can.

I am running linux - and, have "tuned it" to "bare minimum" - almost nothing is running that is not necessary.

It is an old computer running an old version of linux and an old version of the browser.

All of the "bells and whistles" on "modern updated" web pages today just "beat it up"...

I plan to have this problem solved in the very near future by way of a faster computer.

"Lord willing or allowing..."

I'm not trained in Linux so I can't help there but usually it is quite fast, at least compared to windows. Maybe it's time to try a newer version and see if that helps...also old duo core laptops are pretty cheap. They are old but that level of processor can handle pretty much anything, especially Linux.

Yes - as a rule - Linux - in general - out-performs Windows in every way.

I plan to 'upgrade' everything - the hardware, the operating system, the browser, ...

But, for now, I am "stuck" with this miserable [situation] (and, have been for a while now) - until I can change it - and make it better.

Both.

... and we know that science is sometimes incorrect ...
Science is never incorrect. :) Scientists are sometimes (ofttimes) incorrect. Scientists are also sinners; many with a unified agenda that is not any part of science.

True science & the Bible are in perfect harmony. Always practice science under the authoritative light of the Bible, with the understanding that science is finite in its scope. The miraculous and the divine are beyond its scope.

The Bible's revelation is unilateral and doesn't come about by scientific inquiry.
