1: I concede that you may have a point in respect to civil weddings and the like - but if people make lifelong vows to each other
then the moral expectation is that vows ought to be honoured.
2: 1Corinthians 7 is the chapter on marriage, and it does not state that if an unbelieving spouse leaves a believer then one is
free to remarry.
One would be expected to live as a person separated from their married spouse - the scriptures still command that a
Christian disciple must remain faithful and righteous unto God.
Only if the unbelieving spouse commits adultery and/or remarries is a Christian free to remarry.

15 Yet if the unbelieving departeth, let him depart: the brother or the sister is not under bondage in such cases: but God hath
called us in peace.
16 For how knowest thou, O wife, whether thou shalt save thy husband? or how knowest thou, O husband, whether thou shalt
save thy wife?
1Corinthians 7:

my understanding of these verses is that the remaining faithful disciple is not under the marital bondage and need not leave the
church on account of an unbelieving spouse that wants to depart.
verse 16 I believe upholds the value of remaining as a separated spouse because one's faithfulness (and prayers) may well bring
back the unbelieving spouse to salvation.
This also fits in with what Jesus said about hating your mother and father, etc … for the gospel's sake.
I am very much for keeping your wedding vows for life. I also believe that the most harmful thing that one can do to a spouse is to betray their trust by cheating on them. As far as physical, mental, verbal abuse or lack of providing financially by working, drinking, drugs, etc. let your conscience be your guide regarding possible divorce, and later on, subsequent remarriage.

Worldly people are free to do what worldly people do. They do not submit themselves to the moral laws of God.
But God did see that not all marriages would be good and that conflicts and failures would arise [given our sinful natures].
Nevertheless even foreknowing our failures and propensity for divorce , Jesus still declared as God that for Jews and Christians
there is still only one acceptable reason before God for a marriage divorce - adultery.

In my church some marriage breakdowns result in separation only, especially when neither party goes on to commit
any adultery nor to seek remarriage.

It would seem that marriage is a lot more spiritually important to God than it us for us mere mortals.

Divorce, if done legally for the right reason, is permitted by God in the Old and New Testaments.
Agreed. It would have been good to divide the post into paragraphs, but it's too late now. Just a note for the future, since you get just 5 minutes (believe it or not) to fix any problems. Which is a divorce from reality.;)

Paul gives permission for remarriage as an accommodation not as a commandment. 1 Cor 7:1:9
