In around 1020 BC the Israelite tribes reunited to form the united kingdom of Israel and Judah when the prophet Samuel anointed Saul from the tribe of Benjamin as the first king.

Due to his disobedience to God, Saul’s reign was curtailed and his kingdom given to another dynasty. David from the tribe of Judah was chosen by God and anointed by the prophet Samuel as king.

Saul’s reign was characterized by constant conflict with Philistines, and then by civil war against forces loyal to David.

Saul’s heir, Ishbaal (aka Ishbosheth), took over rulership of Israel after the death of his father and three brothers but ruled for only two years before he was assassinated.

David, who had become king of the tribe of Judah only, was appointed king of Israel in Ishbaal’s place after his death reigning from c. 1000-961 BC.

Solomon, David’s son and successor, maintained the unified monarchy, c. 961-922 BC.

On the succession of Solomon’s son, Rehoboam, in c. 930 BC, the country split into two kingdoms: the kingdom of Israel (containing the ten Northern tribes and including the cities of Shechem and Samaria) in the North and the kingdom of Judah (containing Jerusalem) in the South.

The History of the Kings of Israel and Judah was characterized by their constant disobedience to God; only a handful of kings were faithful and whenever a disobedient king rose to power, he led the whole nation away from God and turned the people to idolatry.

The kingdom of Israel (or Northern kingdom, aka Samaria and Ephraim) existed as an independent state until c. 731 BC when it was conquered by the Assyrian Empire, while the kingdom of Judah (or Southern kingdom) existed as an independent state until c. 586 BC when it was conquered by the Babylonian Empire.

- SAUL:

1. Before a battle against the Philistines, the Israelites are waiting for Samuel to come and make a sacrifice to God. Many are afraid of the philistines and start to go away from Saul. So Saul decides to makes sacrifices without waiting for Samuel. As a consequence he loses God’s approval and God will establish another king for Israel. (1 Samuel 13)

2. God asks Saul to destroy completely the Amalekites because they fought against Israel when the people came from Egypt. He must kill everyone (men, women, children and animals). He doesn’t kill the kenites because they were loyal to Israel. So he destroys the amalekites except the king and the animals and all that is good. As usual they don’t do it as God tells them. Saul says that Israel has kept the best of the animals to offer to God as sacrifices. But Samuel answers Saul that it is better to obey God than offer sacrifices. As a consequence Saul is rejected by God as king of Israel. And Samuel tells him there is no escape! Somebody else will become king of Israel. And Samuel kills the king of the Amalekites! And Samuel won’t see Saul anymore until his death! (1 Samuel 15)

3. David goes to Ahimelech the priest and tells him that he is on a mission for the king and he asks him for bread. So the priest gives him holy bread because there is nothing else. He also asks for a sword but there is only Goliath’s sword that David killed so he gets this sword. Then he goes to king Achish of Gad and he behaves as if he was crazy so he won’t kill him. (1 Samuel 21)
When Saul hears about that, he brings Ahimelech the priest and asks him why he helped David. The priest explains to him. But Saul asks his guards to kill Ahimelech and his family but they refuse. So he asks Doeg the Edomite to kill them and he kills 85 men who are priests and he strikes Nob the city of priests. He kills men and women and children and animals. One son of Ahimelech survives and goes to David. (1 Samuel 22)

As a consequence, Saul dies in a battle against the Philistines with three of his sons (Jonathan, A·binʹa·dab, and Malʹchi-shuʹa).

- Ishbosheth becomes king of Israel when he is 40 and he reigns for two years. And David is king over the house of Judah for seven years and six months. Then the servants of the two kings meet and there is a fight between the young men of the two kings (12 against 12). And the servants of David win. Then the two houses keep fighting and David gets stronger. Then Abner makes a covenant with david so he can become the king of Israel. Abner and David meet. Then when Abner leaves, but Joab calls him back without telling David and he kills him because he had killed his brother. And Ishbosheth is killed by two men. So we don’t have any information about Ishsheth and how he behaved toward God.

So Saul reigned for 20 years, david and Solomon for 40 years. Both David and Solomon get many wives and concubines.

- David follows God through all his life. He couldn’t build God’s house because he was a man of war and fights many wars. But david sinned against God:

1. he has intercourse with Bathsheba and as she is pregnant he organizes the death of her husband who is one of his soldiers. As a consequence, he would have many troubles in his house.

2. David is incited to count the people of Israel and Judah and God becomes angry against them. Then David is struck with remorse after counting the population. He asks God for forgiving him for his foolish act. Then God gives David three options and he must choose one: seven years of famine or three months to flee from his adversaries or three days of pestilence in the country. So God sends a pestilence on Israel and 70,000 die and then God stops the pestilence after David’s offerings and sacrifices.

- Solomon:

Solomon asks wisdom to God so he gets everything from him. He builds the house of God.

Then Solomon gets into trouble: it seems that human wisdom is worthless, it doesn’t matter how hard man strives! Solomon loves women, many foreign women especially those God told the Israelites to keep away. Because God knew they would go after other gods, their gods! Think about 700 wives and 300 concubines: what a madness! The more wisdom you get the more stupid you become! And Solomon goes after other gods! End of the story! So Solomon goes against God. And God tells him that he will take his kingdom away, but not during his life because of David. So he will take the kingdom from his son who will only keep one tribe! And God finds opponents to Solomon. And God wants Jeroboam to become king of Israel and Solomon’s son will only lead Judah! Then Solomon dies!
