David learns how to survive at any price. Once again it’s a good way to learn how to be a good king or simply a good person. You know that today you are alive and tomorrow you can die!

David goes to the cave of Abdulam. Then the people who are in trouble go to him: 400 men. Then he leaves his parents with the king of Moab. He is told by the prophet gad to go to the land of Judah. When Saul hears about that, he brings Ahimelech the priest and asks him why he helped David. The priest explains to him. But Saul asks his guards to kill Ahimelech and his family but they refuse. So he asks Doeg the Edomite to kill them and he kills 85 men who are priests and he strikes Nob the city of priests. He kills men and women and children and animals. One son of Ahimelech survives and goes to David.

Once again Saul rebels against God by killing his priests and the people living in Nob the city of priests. We can imagine that he will end badly. Seeing Saul’s behavior toward God enhances the behaviors of faithful men like Job and Daniel and Samuel toward God.

God tells him to flee so David tells him with his 600 men. And David goes to the wilderness. So Saul doesn’t go out to fight him. Saul tries to get David constantly but God prevents him to find him. Jonathan goes to find David and encourage him. He tells David that he will become king of Israel. So both men make another covenant. The men of Zip tell Saul that they will surrender David in his hands. So Saul goes to get David. At a time they are very close. But Saul hears that the Philistines have attacked Israel so Saul leaves to fight the Philistines.

1 Samuel 24

Once again Saul looks for David in the wilderness with 3000 men. There he goes to a cave to relieve himself not knowing that David and his men are in the same cave. David’s men tell David to kill Saul but he doesn’t want to kill the anointed of God so he just takes a piece of his coat. Then David speaks to Saul and tells him he could have killed him. And he asks God to judge both of us. Then Saul starts to weep loudly and he recognizes that David is more righteous than him and that he will become king of Israel. And he asks David to swear that he won’t kill any of his descendants; And after that Saul goes away.

David keeps being faithful to God and he is blessed even if he always has to flee from Saul to survive. On the contrary, Nabal dies all at once and Saul will make a bad end.

1 Samuel 27

David decides to go to the land of the Philistines with his 600 men hoping that Saul would stop looking for him. David asks for a city and he receives Ziklag. He lives in the land of the Philistines for a year and four months. He goes to fight against different people in the surroundings and kills everybody and gets for him the animals and the clothing. This situation reminds us of the Book of Job when a spirit speaks to one of the three associates of Job against Job when Satan is doing his best against him. Here again Saul has to removed all the mediums and fortune-tellers from Israel because they were against God’s law. Moreover, Samuel wasn’t allowed to speak to Saul when God left him because of his behavior. Then, he would speak to him through death, it is impossible! Besides, the woman describes what she sees in a vision, something which looks like Samuel when he was alive!

As we have the possibility to compare the faithfulness of Job, Daniel and Samuel, we also have the possibility to compare the evolution of faithfulness of Saul, David and Solomon through the use of power. In fact, when people have power, they often start forgetting God and going in the wrong direction. It’s a question of time. Power is pervasive and destructive. It’s the same with wisdom if it’s not mixed with humility.
