What does Eli tell his wicked sons they cause the Lord’s people to do? (I Samuel 2:24)

The Israelites speak about their sins.

As the child Samuel grew up he was in favor with both the people and who else? (I Samuel 2:26)

God. Eli and his sons stayed at God’s service, even if they were bad, so Samuel could replace them. So there was no vacant seat.

The man of God who came to Eli prophesied five things against him and his house. Name them. (I Samuel 2:31-33)

- All of Eli’s descendants will have a short life.

- Most of his descendants will die by the sword of man.

It remind us of what happened to Adam and his descendants. In fact we bear the consequences of our parents’ actions ! I must add the consequences of all humanity !

What does the man of God who came to Eli say “that everyone that is left in thine house shall come and crouch to him for? (I Samuel 2:36)

They will come and bow down to him for the payment of money and a loaf of bread and will say : « assign me, please, to one of the priestly offices to eat a piece of bread. »

Who said, “Here am I” when the Lord called when the lamp of God went out? (I Samuel 3:4)

- Samuel did it

- And it is the beginning of an exceptional relationship !

- One we have to take into account !

- One we must not forget !

Looking for Samuel

1 Samuel 1
That man goes up from his city year after year to worship and to sacrifice to God in Shiloh. That is where the twos sons of Eli, Hophni and Phineas, served as priests to God.

- Right, here is a servant of God who goes to worship and to sacrifice to God as he is supposed to do!

- Nothing special, nothing wrong even if he has two wives!

- But that’s the Israelites: we know they didn’t know how to serve God in the right way even if they were told!

- In fact, they didn’t want to do it the proper way!

- They preferred to have a look at the other nations and copy them!

Looking for Samuel

1 Samuel 1
While she prays for a long time before God, Eli is watching her mouth. Hannah is speaking in her heart, only her lips are trembling, but her voice is not heard. So Eli thinks she is drunk. Eli says to her: “How long will you stay drunk? Stop drinking your wine.”

- When Hannah speaks to God, she is sincere, it comes from her heart and she opens it to him!

- She doesn’t say anything in a hurry or mechanically!

- And Eli thinks she is drunk!

- That’s strange because he is old!

- So he must have seen many people praying!

- Judging by appearance is not good: it only leads to misunderstanding!

Looking for Samuel

1 Samuel 2
Then Hannah says in prayer:
My heart rejoices in God;
My horn is exalted by God.
My mouth is opened wide against my
enemies,
For I rejoice in your acts of salvation.
There is no one like God,
There is no one but you,
And there is no rock like our God.
Do not keep speaking with haughtiness;
Let nothing arrogant come from your
mouth,
For God is a God of knowledge,
And by him deeds are rightly evaluated.
The bows of mighty men are shattered,
But those who are stumbling are given
strength.
The well-fed must hire themselves out for
bread,
But the hungry hunger no more.
The barren has given birth to seven,
But she who had many sons has become
desolate.
God kills, and he preserves life;
He brings down to the Grave, and he raises
up.
God impoverishes, and he enriches;
He abases, and he exalts.
He raises the lowly one from the dust;
He lifts up the poor from the ash heap,
To make them sit with princes,
Giving them a seat of honor.
To God belong earth’s supports,
And he places the productive land upon
them.
He guards the steps of his loyal ones,
But the wicked will be silenced in
darkness,
For not by power does a man prevail.
God will shatter those fighting against
him;
He will thunder against them from the
heavens.
God will judge to the ends of the earth,
He will give power to his king
And exalt the horn of his anointed one.”

- What a beautiful prayer for God!

- It could be the prayer of faithful ones like Job, Daniel, Samuel, Moses, Abraham and others when they rejoice!

Looking for Samuel

1 Samuel 3
Samuel lies down until the morning; then he opens the doors of God’s house. Samuel is afraid to tell Eli of the vision.

- That’s definitely interesting!

- Samuel understands perfectly God’s message!

- He knows it is a condemnation against Eli and his sons!

- But above all against Eli!

- And Eli is like a father to Samuel!

- And he is the one who teaches him about God’s service!

Looking for Samuel

1 Samuel 4
The Israelites are beaten by the Philistines but they don’t know why. So they decide to take the ark of God’s covenant. The two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phineas, are also there with the ark of the covenant of the true God. As soon as the ark of the covenant of god comes into the camp, all the Israelites break out into loud shouting, so that the earth shakes. And the philistines become afraid of the God who struck Egypt. But once again the Philistines defeat the israelites and kill 30,000 foot soldiers. And they capture the Ark of God and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phineas die.

- As a matter of fact, something is wrong!

- Because the Israelites lose twice, the Ark is captured and the two sons of Eli die!

- And bringing the Ark hasn’t changed anything!

- And who died? The two sons of Eli!

- And the price is high because many Israelites lose their lives!

- Is that God’s people?

- Are you serious?

- Come on!

Looking for Samuel

1 Samuel 7
Then the Ark is brought to Kiriath-jearim. It lasts 20 years before the Ark comes to this city and the house of Israel begins to seek after God. Then the Israelites take away all the foreign gods they have. Then Samuel prays for the Israelites. And Samuel begins serving as judge over the Israelites. Once again a there is a war between the Philistines and the Israelites who ask for help from God. So Samuel makes an offering and asks God for help and God answers him. And he sends thunder against the philistines and he throws them into confusion and Israel defeats them. And the Israelites pursue them and kill many. As a consequence, the Philistines don’t go to the land of Israel. And Israel recovers its cities and the territory taken by the Philistines. And Samuel keeps judging Israel and he travels once a year through the country to do his job and returns to his house in Ramah where he also judges Israel.

- So most of the time Israel opposes God and when they are in a too bad situation they call for him!

- That’s a strange way to be a special people!

- They have been struck so many times!

- Fortunately, Samuel is their judge and he follows God and he has a good relationship with him!

- And God listen to him!

- Thus all the time it is a relationship between God and one of his faithful servants!

- Without such a relationship between GOD and ONE MAN, they would have been rejected all at once!

Looking for Samuel

1 Samuel 11

Samuel speaks before Israel, he says he is old, he did his best as judge over Israel and Israel testifies about Samuel great job for them. And he speaks about all the sins of Israel and the price they have been paying for that. He warns Israel if the people oppose God. And he is going to call on God to bring thunder and rain as it is the wheat harvest so they can understand what they have done against god by asking for a human king. So Thus the same day God made it thunder and rain so Israel was greatly in fear of God and of Samuel. And Samuel will continue to instruct Israel. But he warns them again to follow God if they don’t want to be punished.

- Israel is warned!

- Israel sins!

- Israel is punished!

- And the story repeats all the time!

- Except that the sins are so numerous that they will end being rejected!

Looking for Samuel

1 Samuel 16

God sends Samuel to Jesse and he anoints one of his sons that is David the youngest one. And Saul asks for David because he plays the Harp well so Saul can find relief.

- Man only thinks superficial and according to appearances!

- God knows the inside!

- That’s why he chooses David!

- But David will become king!

- And because of power he will do so bad actions!

- And the price will be high according to the gravity of his bad actions!

- And man never understands!

- And today we see the same story!

- How boring it is!

Looking for Samuel

1 Samuel 20
David is afraid of Saul trying to kill him again. So he has a discussion with Jonathan and they decide that David goes away. And Jonathan will check what ts to do with him. Then Saul asks after David and Jonathan invents a story. So Saul tells him he knows Jonathan is on David’s side so he becomes angry. He asks Jonathan to have him come so he can kill him. Then Jonathan goes away and tells David about his father. Then David leaves.

- Jonathan knows that God is with David!

- He knows that David will become king instead of him!

- But Jonathan is not jealous!

- Here we have an example of what is real friendship!

- But in this world real friendship is getting harder and harder to find!

- In fact, real anything is difficult to find!

- Because superficiality is corrupting everything!

- It is like a dangerous virus which spreads everywhere and there is no cure!

- A pandemic!

Looking for Samuel

1 Samuel 23

God tells David to strike the philistines and help Keilah. And he killed many and rescues the inhabitants of Keilah. Saul goes to besiege David in Keilah. Saul’s men are close to David and his men. But a messenger tells Saul to leave and look for the philistines who have made a raid on the land.

- Saul keeps looking for David to kill him!

- But God protects David and helps him to survive!

- God blesses David in everything he does!

- David carefully listens to god to know what he must do!

Looking for Samuel

1 Samuel 27

- David decides to leave the land of Israel and looks for protection among the philistines!

- And Saul stops searching for him!

- At this time, David has only two wives, Jezreel and Abigail!

- He stays with the Philistines foe a year and four months!

- And David would fight the Geshurtites, the girzites and the amalekites!

- He would kill men and women and keeps the animals and clothing!

- Thus they couldn’t speak to the Philistines!

- So Achish the Philistine king thinks David will always be his servant!

- Thus David shows himself cunning!

- Well, he has no other way to escape Saul even if God is with him!

Looking for Samuel

2 Samuel 2

David asks God if he must go up into one of the cities of Judah and God tells him to go to Hebron. There he is anointed as king over the house of Judah. Abner, the chief of Saul’s army makes Saul’s son Ishbosheth king over Israel. He is 40 when he becomes king of Israel and he reigns for two years. And David is king in hebron over Judah for seven years and six months. Then a fight occurs between 12 men of Benjamin and Saul’s son Ishbosheth and 12 from the servants of David. And David’s men win.

- David was anointed king by Samuel according to God’s will!

- He becomes king over Judah!

- But Abner, the chief of Saul’s army makes Saul’s son king over Israel!

- He does so probably to stay chief of the army!

- He doesn’t care about God’s will!

- But it won’t be a good choice because he will die!

- It is always dangerous to oppose God!

- But it is a tradition in Israel!

Looking for Samuel

2 Samuel 6

David gathers 30,000 men to bring the Ark of the true God. It is placed on a wagon. Then it nearly falls so Uzzah grabs hold it. Because Uzzah touches the Ark, God gets angry so he kills Uzzah. And David becomes angry and fearful at the same time. So David decides not to bring the Ark to Jerusalem. It staysz in the house of Obedom the Gittite and God blesses him and all his house. So finally David decides to bring the Ark to Jerusalem. Michal Saul daughter and David ‘s wife has an argument with David because he celebrated the coming of the Ark to Jerusalem. And he did it by dancing in front of everybody and Michal told him it was not correct for a king. And she kept barren all her life !

- There is often a great difference between God’s will and man’s will!

- And there are always consequences often bad ones but men still don’t understand!

- Apparently that’s the same chorus centuries after centuries!

- And men still don’t understand!

- And they are surprised but if they knew just a bit more the Bible they shouldn’t be surprised!

- Unfortunately, the next surprise will be destructive!

- But a human being is supposed to evolve to become an adult!

- Apparently, it’s rarely the case because he keeps behaving like a baby who never understands!

- Sooner or later we must become adult and if we refuse we must assume the consequences!

- That’s life, nothing to be sad or happy!

- We may decide to take the train or not!
