To say that if the Jews did it then that makes it wrong is not reasonable thinking. The Jews had prayer, was prayer wrong? The Jews were custodians of the OT, was the old testament wrong?
The Jews did what they did because the OT directed them to do it. The OT was to point them to Messiah. Christians have Christ and look back to Messiah. We have both OT and NT. We have the complete revelation. We have Christ as the object of our worship and adoration.

Worship in Spirit and Truth. Prayer is to be worship in Spirit. Will it be corrupted by mans desire to make it a ritual?

If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 1 John 1:8
I think from the context he is referring to the imputation of Christ's righteousness to us, and our sin forgiven and washed away.

Not obligated! There are many ways the Lord tells us is a good way to live, and we are always left free to choose. It is a question of how we react to scripture. Some things are necessary, those things we must be forgiven for if we don't listen. Some things are for our benefit, listening results in blessings for us. This is for a blessing. You are certainly free to choose not to be blessed by following the Lord's instructions.
I guess as an example, if you celebrate Passover rather than Resurrection, one of the requirements of Passover is that all your males are circumcised. If you don't ensure this, surely it is hypocrisy, as you are celebrating a feast in breach of the very rules of the feast. If you ensure the rules of the feast, you become a Judaiser. Far simpler and more honest to celebrate Resurrection Sunday, than to go back to the Old Testament.
