If you read the Bible straight without any idea of how things were back in the OT, or any idea of what some of the words mean, then you’re gonna get some serious confusion.

Like the verses about “hating your life” don’t necessarily mean you wanna end it, but to not love it and all the stuff in it more than God. Without some background a person could read that and think God wants them to hate themselves.
