“Born again” is born in spirit, that’s the same as saved. If you believe in water baptism and any form of work based salvation, then Peter is your answer. There was nothing he did that could earn him salvation, even Matthias, the 12th apostle he picked was irrelevant, because Jesus chose Saul of Tarsus.
The Roman church teaches that baptism makes one to be born again.
While in the matter of Salvation they teach Jesus purchased redemption by his sacrifice on the cross, he delivered that purchase to the church for it to then be given to people through the sacraments.

The Council of Trent decreed anathama, a curse, five Solas/"alone".

Faith Alone, Sola Fide, is one such Sola.
So, when we read scripture that tells us we are saved by grace through faith and that is not of ourselves so that no e may boastbecause it is a free irrevocable gift of God, the church via that council calls that untrue.

This is one reason why we're encountering conflict from certain members when we who are not Catholic make our point regarding faith and eternal Salvation.

Sola Fide was one of the conflict issues that led to the Reformation.

Do I believe that Peter didn't receive the Holy Spirit when Jesus breathed on him? Yes I do. Both this and the promise of the Helper refer to the Pentecost, that was a big day on God’s schedule for the birth of the church. He didn’t receive the Helper twice, and neither does any one of us. In the next chapter, he and the other disciples went back to fishing - his old profession BEFORE he met Jesus. In modern terms, he was backsliding. That was his old fleshly comfort zone, not the work of the Holy Spirit.

Romans 8:28-39
New King James Version

Romans 8:30
New King James Version

30 Moreover whom He predestined (God wrote all of his elects names (book of life) before anything was created), these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified.

Romans 8:9
New King James Version

9 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.

I assume, less than 1% of the world's population are God's elect.

So many 'back and forths' reiterations of arguments pro and con for OSAS, with no change of opinion. Minds/hearts are set in stone and everyone is reittering their arguments over and over with no change of mind.

Hearts are set in stone, half of the posters on this thread are right and half are dead wrong. God will judge.

This is the problem with trying to interpret Scripture on your own, you become your own 'little infallible pope' and have closed your mind to all who disagree with you.

You want God's word, Scripture, to tell you what you want to believe is true, not what God designates as truth. Many on this thread have twisted God's word/Scripture to be their own word and not God's.
Best to pray to God for understanding and everything.

The Roman church teaches that baptism makes one to be born again.
That's what the Bible teaches too.

John 3:5,6 KJV
5Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit.6Flesh is born of flesh, but spirit is born of the Spirit. 7Do not be amazed that I said, ‘You must be born again.’

Faith Alone, Sola Fide, is one such Sola.

Sola Fide was one of the conflict issues that led to the Reformation.
Is that right? maybe this needs a deeper study.

John 6:29 KJV
29Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.

That's the last straw that crashed the camel's back. It was much worse than the money changers and livestock dealers in the temple.
Hard to believe anyone would fall for it.Seriously.
Then again, witnessing people burned alive by the church and picturing that firey fate to last eternally if one were to go to Hell would likely inspire people to believe in and pay anything so to eventually be judged worthy of entering heaven.

Pope Benedict approved reinstatement of the practice. He was the pope before the current one that resigned his office due to health reasons. Not really but that was the official excuse.

You're just muddying the water. Water baptism is just a ritual, spiritual baptism is the real salvation. There's no interim period.
God does not muddy water. Nor does He mandate rituals. You must be referring to some other Diety.

My God is very clear;

Baptism is Required

Peter 3: 21.... whereunto even baptism doth also now save us...

John 3:5 .......Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

Acts 2;38-....Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Acts 22;16... And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.

Luke 3;33 KJV .... “And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;”

Galations 3:26...... For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.
27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

KJV Marrk 16:16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

KJV Mrark 1;4 John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.

Matthew 3:14... But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? 15. Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now, for thus it becometh us to fulfil all rightesousness. Then He suffered Him.

KJV Matthew 28:19..... Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:.

Acts 8:12-18: But when they believed Philip as he preached the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized.

John 3; 22 After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judaea; and there he tarried with them, and baptized.
23 And John also was baptizing in Aenon near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized.

Quote from Billy Graham that is note worthy;
....Also, to clarify I did not say remission of sin takes place at repentance. Scripture makes it clear that it occurs upon obedience to water baptism in the name of the Lord Jesus. Each is a step of faith, along with receiving the Holy Ghost, in the process of one's spiritual rebirth

.."Paul explains the doctrinal significance of what occurs when one is baptized. His explanation is found in his letter to those who had already been obedient to the command.

Paul tells the Roman Christians what actually occurred when they were/are baptized; they were baptized into His death. Being buried with Jesus into His death resulted in their sin being destroyed.

Even though Paul explains this concept, the NEW AGE RELIGION TEACHING is......... that water baptism is nothing other than a mere public display.......... And that is so far removed from the truth.

Keep in mind that Satan knows if he can continue to perpetuate that lie ...... he can keep people from entering the kingdom of God. Thus He has proven scripture which says ...in the end times there will be ...great delusions.....they are here.

Conclusion....teaching that baptism is not necessary is violation of Rev. 22;19.... And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. 20 He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus. (Also two other books of the Bible).

No, God doesn't muddy the water, YOU do. The anointing of the Holy Spirit is called Born Again for a reason. Water baptism is referring to the fluid in the womb before your birth. Any living and breathing human being went through that baptism, therefore it's described as literally "born of water". The point is, you have NO contribution to your birth, neither your physical birth or your spiritual birth.

No, it is not mandated.

As someone has already said early on, if baptism were mandatory for Salvation the poor soul on their death bed who accepted Christ would not be Saved. Because they were not baptized.

Or that death row prisoner, or that person a deadly car crash expiring on scene yet in the care of a preacher who stopped to serve.

To bad dear dying lady. You may have accepted Jesus then and there as savior but because we couldn't bring your broken body into a baptismal tank you're still dead in your sins and destined for eternal suffering.

No. That's not good news at all. That's my water baptism being compulsory for Salvation is a bad and false teaching.

Adding: We know. baptism isn't mandatory because of all those people in scripture saved without it.

Repentance must not be required either, in you thinking. They go together.

And by the way, water baptism that John the Baptist performed was definitely a ritual, that was rooted in the cleansing ritual for Levite priests before they enter into the temple, it was written in the Torah.

Keep it in context;
Baptism Under the OT for skin cleansing.

Baptism Under the NT...required for sin cleansing.
Study scriptures....it helps.

OT and NT are connected, and the whole purpose of water baptism is to imitate the process of natural birth - bursting out of the womb. Does that water cleanse sin? Or the blood of Christ that cleanse sin? Before you condescendingly lecture on me, how about you remove the speck from your own eyes and get your theology straight?

You are either sown into the world as a sheep=God's elect or goats=nonelect. Water baptism is not mandatory but being baptized by the Holy Spirit is mandatory.

When you haven't paid attention to those who try to reach you already?

Let's let you try.
Those who were in the bible and were saved without baptism and that you apparently overlook.

The thief on the cross.Luke 23

The paralyzed man brought to Jesus during one of his sermons and through the roof of a hut.
Matthew 9

The woman who washed Jesus' feet while he was at Simon's house. Luke 7.

John 4. The Samaritin woman at the well. According to Jewish tradition Jesus, a Jew, wasn't even to talk to her. She was unclean because she was living in sin.
But Jesus talked to her. And she was saved by her faith in him. The living water that insured she would never thirst again.

Dare you say they were not saved because they were not also baptized?

Liquid water doesn't save us. The living water that is Jesus does. Which is the real meaning of Peter's remarks in 1Peter 3:21

Baptism was a ritual that symbolized Salvation by the living water that is holy spirit.
If Baptism was requisite for Salvation Jesus would have baptized everyone in the above scriptures.

But he didn't.

And yet they were still saved by him.

Article clip:

"For even as the body is one yet has many members, and all the members of the body, though they are many, are one body, so also is Christ. For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit."
1 Corinthians 12:12–13

Apparently baptism saves us, but which baptism? There are several types of baptism including: – John’s baptism of repentance (Act 19:3–4) – water baptism done in Jesus’ name (Act 10:48, 19:5) – Holy Spirit baptism (Act 11:16) – Jesus’ baptism of suffering (Matt. 20:22) – baptism for the dead (1 Cor. 15:29) So many baptisms! It’s no wonder people argue. But in his letter to the Ephesians, Paul said there is only one baptism: Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. (Eph. 4:3–6) What is the one baptism? Theologians will tell you that Paul is referring to some rite undertaken by new believers, but which one? “It’s repeating the apostle’s creed.” “It’s water baptism.” Arguments about baptism lead to strife and division, which is the exact opposite of what Paul is calling for here. “Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit.” The one baptism is not water baptism or any outward act. It is the baptism that happens to every believer when they are put into the body of Christ by the Holy Spirit. For even as the body is one yet has many members, and all the members of the body, though they are many, are one body, so also is Christ. For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. (1 Cor. 12:12–13) The moment you came to Jesus, you were baptized or placed into his body by the Spirit.
