Hi dcontroversal, it seems to me that, "We then as workers together .. with Him" covers a LOT of territory (especially when taken in the context of Paul's other Epistles, and the rest of the OT/NT, as well). While the immediate context does not specifically include marriage, I believe the general context does.

Do you perhaps believe that Christian marriage, and the raising of children within a Christian marriage, is somehow NOT an example of us, "working together for the cause of Christ .. with God" :unsure:

Thanks!

~Deut

1 Corinthians 7
39 A woman is bound to her husband as long as he lives. But if her husband dies, she is free to marry anyone she wishes, but he must belong to the Lord.
.
NO.......Context is the KEY and you as well as others are EMBELLISHING the context beyond that which is given....

1st Corinthians 7 <---PAUL covers marriage between a believer and unbeliever in this chapter and states clearly that it is OK

2nd Corinthians 6 <---Paul covers WORKING together for the cause of CHRIST and what YOU guys are saying not only embellishes it beyond the context given, but also PITS the bible against itself and contradicts what he said in 1st Corinthians 7

We cannot alleviate the context or add to it.......the context is a working together for the cause of Christ....not a marriage...PAUL covers marriage between a believer and unbeliever in chapter 7 1st Corinthians......
That covers a marriage that's already happened. The perspective I and I think many were considering if a believer wants to marry an unbeliever. As in they're not married yet? A wife no longer has to obey her husband by law and the husband no longer has to consent to a divorce from his wife..

So? What do you have to say about this? Does this concern the Bond between a believer and unbeliever too or do you think that shouldnt be?
Is this about a bond, or is this just an admonition about watching the company you keep?

2 Cor. 6:14-18 "Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty."

I think this simply says to watch what crowd we run with, and that is all. :cool:

I understand that. The unequal yoke has been used it the context of 'a christian wants to marry a non christian who, dosn't want to become a christian', as long as I can remember.

the context is working together for the cause of Christ....
If the context is working together for the cause of Christ, then it would apply to anyone who accepted Christ as their savior and is now made righteous through Christ so they are working for the cause of Christ.

There is no IF about it....

We then, as workers together with him, beseech you also that ye receive not the grace of God in vain.
(For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.) Giving no offence in any thing, that the ministry be not blamed:
But in all things approving ourselves as the ministers of God
, in much patience, in afflictions, in necessities, in distresses,
In stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labours, in watchings, in fastings;
By pureness, by knowledge, by long suffering, by kindness, by the Holy Ghost, by love unfeigned,
By the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armour of righteousness on the right hand and on the left,
By honour and dishonour, by evil report and good report: as deceivers, and yet true;
As unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and, behold, we live; as chastened, and not killed;
As sorrowful, yet alway rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things.
O ye Corinthians, our mouth is open unto you, our heart is enlarged.
Ye
are not straitened in us, but ye are straitened in your own bowels. Now for a recompence in the same, (I speak as unto my children,) be ye also enlarged.
Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?
And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?
And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate
, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.
And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty

The context is ---> We then, as workers together with him

AND it is written to the Corinthian CHURCH

Hi again dcontroversal, the reason that I believe what I do about this verse & passage is 1. because that's the conclusion that I've come to after studying it, and 2. that's what I've been taught, over and over and over again, since I became a Christian 33 years ago.

I've heard ~MANY~ sermons and lectures on 2 Cor 6:14 over the years, in church, at conferences, on the radio, etc., and I own more than 30 commentaries on 2 Corinthians (either on that Epistle alone, or as part of the commentary that's included in a volume with other books and epistles), and ~none~ of them teach what you do about this passage.

A few of them, particularly the shorter/concise commentaries and word studies, do not mention marriage, but NONE of them teach that it's wrong to include marriage as part of the discussion. Do you perhaps know of any theologians who teach what you do, and if so, would you mind pointing me to them (as I would be interested in reading what they have to say)?

Thanks!

~Deut
p.s. - just FYI, part of the reason that I believe what I do about v14 has to do with the teaching of other verses/passages in the Bible, like this one (though the principle reason for my belief comes from the verse itself, and from the passage that contains it).

1 Corinthians 7
39 A woman is bound to her husband as long as he lives. But if her husband dies, she is free to marry anyone she wishes, but he must belong to the Lord.
