Hi Nevin, glad you are joining the fellowship here at CC, welcome! Yes, I'm sure Paul was a very empathetic new man, can you imagine his encounter with the Lord? I think that surely softened his heart and made him see others as needing to be saved. Have fun browsing the Forums and jump in whenever you feel led. God bless you and yours!🙏

Did it though? Where is an example of compassion in his writings?

Was Paul ever empathetic? If yes, can you provide an example please?
Hello Nevin, first off, welcome to CChat :)

As far as your question goes, here's a verse of Paul's that comes to mind.

Romans 12
15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep.
God bless you!! (1 Thessalonians 5:23-24)

~Deuteronomy (David)
p.s. - Here are a few more verses from the Apostle Paul that seem to be along the lines of what you are after. BTW, Paul is my best guess as the human author of the Book of Hebrews, so I included a verse from Hebrews 13, as well.

Romans 15
1 We who are strong ought to bear the weaknesses of those without strength and not just please ourselves.

1 Corinthians 9
20 To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), to win those under the law.
21 To those without the law I became like one without the law (though I am not outside the law of God but am under the law of Christ), to win those without the law.
22 To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some.

Philippians 2

3 Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind let each of you regard one another as more important than himself;
4 do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others.

Hebrew 13
3 Remember the prisoners, as though in prison with them, and those who are ill-treated, since you yourselves also are in the body.

Colossians 3:12
New International Version
12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.

My ful introduction to you all will follow later this month. Two cowritten articles, one for a secular audience and an expanded version that has a clear Christian emphasis are to be published. The Royal Society of Chemistry has first dibs and their choice will appear as a "Member's story" on their revamped website. To be followed by a wave of, at present, 6 other organisations who want to use the story for a variety of reasons. One of these, very pleasingly, includes engaging clergy to preach and bridge the public's perceived gap between science and Christianity. For those articles that appear online I fully intend to post the relevant links on this worthy forum. I have taken soundings of the drafts with 30 replies received from friends and professionals in my ken. Three words were frequently and variously used in the feedback "inspiring, moving and powerful". A Canon of the Church of England and a Director of Mission found the draft story "accesible" and "authentic". My coauthor Christine (Chris) is a fellow Christian and a superb wordsmith. She took my "technical report" draft and transformed it into a flowing, engaging, interesting and colourful account peppered with touches of humour and, for those readers of the faith, subtle biblical references in the secular version. A "right, riveting, read" commented one Scottish friend. We're a clanish lot do you not know?

Please pray for this my first attempted mission and outreach contribution.

Thanking you,

Nevin. (aka Onslowsdry, therein lies a story for another time perhaps?)

Colossians 3 v 12-14 As the elect of God, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with hearts of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Bear with one another and forgive any complaint you may have against someone else. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which is the bond of perfect unity.

Hello again @Nevin, I look forward to reading your full introduction and the papers that you've written when they become available/when you've linked them for us :)

In the meantime, I've been wondering why you asked the OP question that you did, "was Paul ever empathetic?".

Thanks :)

God bless you!! (Numbers 6:24-26)

~Deuteronomy (David)

Dear Deuteronomy,

Earlier that day., and on a different Christian chatline, I had been "beaten up" by an unsympathetic site member who hammered my posts and stance quoting verses written by the Apostle Paul. I was taken aback by these uncompromising and rather severe calls for me to place my trust in God, which I do anyways, and get on with my life with "a stiff upper lip". Not at all helpful or indeed supportive. Where was there Handel's ,paraphrasing Isiah, "comfort ye my people"? Hence, this prompted my question which you answered so satisfactorily. Thank you.

Here's another scripture that is relevant by Paul,
II Cor. 2:4 ' For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote unto you with many tears; not that ye should be grieved, but that ye might know the love which I have more abundantly unto you'. Good Intro, I like questions that call for research, lol.

You know my most recent readings of the epistles has left me very moved by his tender, greetings to say hello to all of the kind and good folk in all the towns that he had spent time in. It's really another way of reading it.
