The best way to get involved with people is in the chat rooms....the button for that is at the top of this page, at the far left. Once you click on it, choose your settings (what speed internet you have, weather you want to show your webcam or not...and weather you want to hear the voice chat or not) then click enter chat.
Once in the room...just introduce yourself, and let everyone know you are new....you will start to get to know people in no time.
