Hey people,
This is something I'm really struggling with, I hope you might be able to help me. It's quite a long winded one.

So at my college I'm a "leader" of the Christian Union, along with 3 other girls who also run it. 2 of these girls speak in tongues. When we have our weekly prayer meeting (a place where we're meant to pray as a group) they see no problem with speaking in tongues in front of the group, even though we don't have anyone with the gift of interpretation of tongues yet (although we're all praying for it, as we should desire all spiritual gifts).

My problem is, after months and months of praying myself for that gift (mainly motivated by jealously sadly) I believe I've been given the gift of tongues myself, God is SO GOOD! It's probably going to be a gift that I mainly keep private though, unless I know there's an interpreter around, but I don't know if that's the right attitude.

SO the question is:
Do people see speaking in tongues in a group (where not everyone has that gift) and without an interpreter, as a thing that's good or bad?
And if you do consider it to be a negative thing, is it something I should mention to the girls who are doing it?

Thank you!

"Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret. 14For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful. 15What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. 16Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest? 17For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified. 18I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all: 19Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue."

The bible is pretty clear on this subject. If you speak in tongues you're not speaking to men but to God. So Speaking in tongues without an interpreter in public is in vain because no one else is edified.

It's not a negative thing but it's not a positive thing for the people that are around the ones speaking in tongues. After all, they have no idea what they're saying, so it doesn't do them any good.

Mmm, I agree. For me, seeing people speaking in tongues made me feel jealous and not engaged in prayer, it's always felt kind of wrong. Especially at my C.U where there are people from all sorts of Christian backgrounds from home and brethren churches to very open charismatic ones, it's never really felt right. And with the scripture, it's a bit hard to see why they think it's an OK thing to do... :/ I'm now wondering if I should discuss it with them.
Thank you very much for your help!

No Problem. In my opinion, you should discuss it but if it leads to arguing, it's not worth it. Being your brothers and sisters in Christ, they should understand. If not then sobeit. You know what I mean? Either way it's still your choice on how you choose to go about it.

Speaking in tongues means to speak in different language. If ou read acts chapter 2 it tells u they were speaking so that everyone could understand because there were people of different nation, if someone speak in tongues someone is suppose to be avle to interpret it, all my life i see people saying they are speakng in tongues but no one undestand what tey are saying. If it cannot be interpret by another human being then it is not tongues.

You have to b careful ho you ask her, don,t offend her, sometimes the things we say could be bad in someone else language, I am a wickness to that. Pray before you go to her. Most of these tongues is something we hearothers saying so we copy from them

"2For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

3But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.

4He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.

5I would that ye all spake with tongues but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying."

The letters to the Corinthians were written because there were people there abusing the gifts they had been give by God through the apostles.
Abusing.
Paul spent much time giving restrictions because they were not honouring God with their gifts. One of them was to be SILENT if there is no interpretation.

The Bible is very plain on it.
