“The shores of human history are lined with the wreckage of nations who have developed the power to build things and have fallen short in the far more important task of building men.”
A quote from my grandfather's book of devotions that he carried while serving in the Army Air Corps (WW2).
In the book the author was speaking of how before WW2 America had decreased military preparations and despite the odds had to quickly mass produce military productions.
But the author begs the question. What good is it to build powerful things but fail to build men? If we fail to build up the next generation then how will these great and powerful tools be used? For good or for evil? Should we use this uranium for energy or destruction?
I recently used this devotion for a Trail Life Court of Honors where we honor young men and their achievements for the following year. It was to remind them that we can be people like those who wanted to build the Tower of Babel or like David who wanted to build God's temple.
What kind of kingdom are we building? Of course, people of character go beyond just men. Who is to help raise up the young Moses, David, or Timothy? Women of character are just as much the fundamental building blocks for a healthy nation.
