John 19:30 "It is finished"
Nothing can compare to this moment in time. The final score of a sports game is not even close. The end of a war cannot elipse this monumentous moment in History. Graduation from college is but a drop in a bucket compared to the completion of this work. The newspapers never printed such a wonderous headline. No movie could ever capture this moment in it's entirety. The World itself cannot produce anything as excelent as an accomplishment. In the History of mankind there is nothing that we can say has accomplished more. The sacrifice of Jesus on the Cross was finished! The work of our salvation was fulfilled by Jesus Christ, the Son of God. The victory had been won. No greater news could be told. No higher purpose than this. There has never been such a proclaimation that was so sweet and reassuring. The World can be certain that the atoning work of Christ is sufficient.

Jesus prayed, " I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do. And now oh Father glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with the before the world was."

What scripture is this you are quoting above? What exactly was Jesus referring to when He hung on the cross and said these words, "It is finished"?

I'm sorry you're going to have to help me here.

Work of Jesus = salvation of the world according to the prophecies God told through His prophets by Jesus virgin birth, death and resurrection.....

Colossians 2:13-15
New King James Version (NKJV)
13 And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, 14 having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. 15 Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.

John 17:4
I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do.

John 17:4
I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do.

John 17:4 seems to be referring to something else than what Jesus was referring to in John 19:30. Jesus could not have been saying, "I have finished the work" in 17:4 and then saying "It is finished" again in 19:30 and be referring to the same thing. It makes no sense.

Again, what is Jesus referring to in John 19:30? What is the "It" that is finished at that moment on the cross?

Thanks,

Thanks,

did you not see the Colossians quote? the spiritual war that was fought at that moment of the cross? IT is the battle for HE triumphed over THEM.

" He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. 15 Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it. "

example of spiritual war?

Revelations 12

7 And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, 8 but they did not prevail, nor was a place found for them[a] in heaven any longer. 9 So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
10 Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, “Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down. 11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death. 12 Therefore rejoice, O heavens, and you who dwell in them! Woe to the inhabitants of the earth and the sea! For the devil has come down to you, having great wrath, because he knows that he has a short time.

work of Jesus life = fulfillment of prophecy

work of the cross = spiritual triumph over all powers of darkness, dominion of Heaven.

Jn 19:30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

The work that Christ was sent to do was finished on the cross. All sin had been judged through His death and now man could believe by faith and be cleansed and foriven of his sin. Man now could be reconciled to God and justified through Christ. Salvation could be freely recieved by grace through faith without having to do any works to earn it. Salvation was now free through Christ and all man has to do is believe.

Read Romans Chapters 1 and 2:
concerning the Righteousness of God, which is very Bad News for jew and gentile. No one will be justified by God's Perfect Law. all have sinned and fallen short of the Glory of God. all lost.

then read Chapter 3:
concerning the Righteousness of God that has been manifested APART FROM THE LAW: the Good News.

Romans 3
The Righteousness of God Through Faith
21But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— 22the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: 23for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. 26It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

27Then what becomes of our boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? By a law of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law. 29Or is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also, 30since God is one—who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith. 31Do we then overthrow the law by this faith? By no means! On the contrary, we uphold the law.

~

this Righteousness of God apart from The Law is the Finished Work Jesus did on our behalf: He lived perfectly obediently fulfilling the righteous requirements of The law; He suffered and died an agonizing death, bearing the wrath for our sins in His body (though He knew none); and God raised Him from the dead - all for our justification. so that we may be blameless and receive eternal life.

we are saved By Grace through FAITH in those words (and Work) by Emmanuel, IT IS FINISHED.
A GIFT.

Romans 4:5
But people are counted as righteous, not because of their work, but because of their faith in God who forgives sinners. (NLT)

But to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness, (NASB)

The OP is excellent and shows that the poster has a very mature understanding of the finished work. Thank God for believers that have an appreciation for the unlimited atonement that was accomplished through the shedding of the blood of Christ. Thank God for all believers that have been completely justified through that blood and the finished work of Christ. This is the message of the gospel that we are to preach in all the world as we are raised up and moved out of our comfort zones of the flesh.

Let me ask ALL these teachers this question.... Was the work of Jesus finished at the cross? If your answer is Yes! Then why did He have to teach the Apostles still? So His teaching was not finished then! Let me assure you, Jesus was only finished in the sacrimental role! Jesus completed the sacrifice there, and that was the ONLY FINISHED He was talking about! Jesus as the sacrifice ended the moment he GAVE UP THE GHOST!!!

This is the sad part about false teachers, they ALL can preach up to this finish! But Jesus DOES WAY more than be a sacrifice! Look I give Jesus Christ ALL the glory of the sacrifice, but to stop giving Him praise there, is just a slap in His face again! You think Jesus stopped having LOVE for you at the cross? Oh boy are you decieved!

Jesus stood UP! Jesus was resurected!!! Him paying for your sin is NO glory in you! NONE! The glory of God is not to forgive sin you committed, the glory of God in YOU IS THE VICTORY JESUS accomplished on the cross.... HE WAS RESURRECTED!!! MANY people died on the cross, only one died undeservingly, but He did not stay at the cross! In Fact, He does not even look back at the cross.... He teaches if one looks back when his hand is on the plough he is not worthy of His Kingdom, then He will also not look back.... So What does Jesus do today?

He will never die again as a sacrificial Lamb of God, no! But He has the POWER OVER ALL FLESH TO GIVE LIFE TO WHOM HE WANTS!!!!! This is the GLORY OF JESUS IN US.... Please do not think I break down the crosswork, man I am one of the people that needed more blood than the next person, so if I have to boast, I will say what an auweful person I was, and I fell further short of the glory of God than most, so I KNOW the blood and crosswork of Jesus better than most...

Maybe that is why I know Jesus Part TWO better also. The part where Jesus is GLORIFIED IN ME!!! Not by forgiving sins, NO! That is PArt one... but the LIFE OF HOLINESS He gives. ONLY HE CAN GIVE THIS LIFE... If Jesus gives you a life AFTER He sanctified you that life is CALLED REBIRTH!!! IT IS AT THE END OF YOUR SALVATION, NOT THE BEGINNING!!!

Look what Jesus says here... As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.

At rebirth you are part of that eternal life... MAN it is a HOLY LIFE WITHOUT SIN! THERE IS NO SIN IN ETERNAL LIFE!!! NONE!!!! If you do not know this...Shame! You have NO CLUE on what salvation is! Jesus does not save half way! NEVER!

Eternal life is... TO KNOW GD AND THE ONE HE SENT!!! Every person that knows HIM, does NOT COMMIT SIN, Becasue they CANNOT SIN, becasue JESUS IS GLORIFIED IN THEM!!! A single sin would have made Jesus a BAD LAMB! Jesus will not allow a single sin to be committed by ANY of the PEOPLE HE IS GLORIFIED IN!!!

The EXACT same INCOMPATANCE OF SIN JESUS HAD IS IN ALL REBORN OF GOD!! Stop making the salvation a hypocratical half heartedly effort from God... You are bought with the BLOOD of Jesus, now Repent and let Him baptize you! The moment Jesus baptize you He glorifies you with the GLORY HE HAD AS MAN!

And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:

Jesus says He is GLORIFIED IN THOSE THAT ARE HIS.... And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them.

Now you get these peole that say they are the brothers of Jesus and the children of God, yet they bow to Satan with sin! How is Jesus glorified in your sin? Oh he forgives again.... Nope the grace will not be abound becasue you did not repent! REPENT and be BAPTIZED WITH HIS GLORY IN YOU!!! And you CANNOT sin! Becasue HIS SEED REMAINETH IN YOU!!!

If God saves a person, God puts that person in HIS PRESENCE, and Jesus in that person will be glorified... RIGHT HERE ON EARTH...
You become part of EVERLASTING LIFE RIGHT HERE ON EARTH!!!

Read again John 17...READ it! And see how powerful God saves.

My prayer..."Lord Jesus Christ, thank you that You chose me, I did not choose You, but You loved me even before the earth was made. Thank You Jesus! And thank You Jesus that YOU want me to be Your brother, and THANK You Jesus that You will call me brother and Yuo will not be ashamed to call me so, becasue YOUR SALVATION IS TO YOUR GLORY AND PERFECTION! Jesus thank You for all the times you had to come back and LEAD me out of my sins! Thank You Jesus for the patience. Thank you for the trials of my faith. Thank you for all these false teachers, they cannot take away the peace and the hope of Your great WORK! Thank You Father that I am clay in your hands! Thank You lord that you make me a vessel to CONTAIN JESUS IN ME!!! Lord You are the Potter, I am the BLESSED CHOSEN CLAY! Thank You Lord ABBA FATHER! Let thou will be done in me, AMEN!!!"""

If Jesus gives you a life AFTER He sanctified you that life is CALLED REBIRTH!!! IT IS AT THE END OF YOUR SALVATION, NOT THE BEGINNING!

this is just so wrong cobus.
you got everything reversed.

John 1
9The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. 10He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. 11He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. 12But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, 13who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

John 3:7
You should not be surprised at my saying, 'You must be born again.'

John 3:6
Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.

John 3:8
The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit."

James 1:18
He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created.

1 Peter 1:23
For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.

You guys are basically saying that Christ's redemptive work was finished at the cross, right? That our redemption was finished or completed, right? Would this be a fair statement?

God bless,

What was finished John 6:37-40 - Will explain that the work of redeeming the sins of those that his Father gave him was effective. Jesus's sacrifice was offered to God, for God's acceptance and not man for man's acceptance. Jesus did not die to save all of mankind, but only for God's elect (Eph 1:4-7) for whom he gave to his Son to die for. Jesus also promised those that his Father gave him an inheritance of eternal heaven by saying that he would not lose any of them but would raise them all up at the last day.

Are you implying that the natural man, (1 Cor 2:14) before he has been born again of the Spirit, can believe in spiritual things? Many revised versions of the KJV have changed the wording of scriptures to imply that the natural man can believe in spiritual things before he has been regenerated by God's grace.
