is it a sin to learn about occults?

like it a sin to learn like everything about the occults and black and withe "magic"? And it is a sin to try nd use weird herbs and "magic" to try and heal someone? just wondering I've never tried to use "magic" but my f riend has been talking about trying to heal her friend with white magic is that a sin?

IMHO, any attempt to acquire knowledge is no sin. Of course that's just my opinion and I'm sure that there are others with views that differ from mine, but that's what makes CC such a great place to have discussions and an exchange of ideas.
 
Jamie, my advice is acquire only knowledge that is according to God's words. Knowledge that leads you to eternal life.
 
It is not a sin to learn about occults because if you learn about them you can help someone get out or stay out of an occult. As for white magic, don't use it. Just use a doctor and/or pray to God that you would be healed.

You don't have to learn about the occult to help someone, ultimately that person needs Jesus, and as were never going to know all about God, it's more productive to study Him. Having said that, with atheism I like to learn about peoples world views. However with the occult, your opening yourself up to a whole supernatural realm that would take great pleasure in making you suffer..........the Christian life is hard enough, without dabbling in the occult

I don't know what methods and ideas they have about healing. Is it through specific types of touches? Is it herbs? What do they say heals you? Because even among Christians many things bring healing.

If you are devoted to Jesus as your only source of faith, then thinking if this is a sin would not even enter your mind. So, you wouldn't be worried if you are sinning and doing something wrong.

But I suggest you not play or take lightly the devil's territory, it will backfire on you. I suggest you know specificallly what needs to be healed, and if the method you choose, a doctor, the words from the bible, your own hands, whatever, that you be knowledgable and informed and be safe.

In other cultures, for example the Indians they have healers.

Herbs are not bad, Americans, they sell them in the grocery store. They work for some people, you just have to know your own body, and if you have money to pay for it.

Forlorn-Hope is always trying to twist things.. Why don't u just go to d point?.. And anyway, u don't need knowledge in all those things, the knowledge u have in d word of God is enough.. All users of magic are going to hell except they repent and return to God!!!!!, so use of magic is also BAD
 
I'd say as long as your learning and seeing the wrong in the occult, as well as not practicing it I wouldn't worry.
 
You can use herbs as medicine without using the occult. God made herbs and plants for us to use. But combine it with prayer, not magic

I used to learn about the occult, for the sake of knowing what its about & how to deal with people in it. I never practiced anything i learned. I'm glad i have that knowledge, because many Christians do not recognize occult activity. Just the other day, in the chat rooms on this site i saw a number of Christians announcing their astrological 'sign'. That is pure & simple occult, yet here ignorant Christians think its ok to dabble in.
'White magic' is typically wiccan, as in earth worship, Goddess worship. The bible is very clear, ALL forms of magic are occult & demon based. Period.
As far as herbs & homeopathic treatments, i think its a very good idea. But still needs to be monitored by a doctor. I treat my anxiety with natural supplements as opposed to man made medicine.
To recap... learning about occult ok, practicing any magic bad, herbs with doctor & prayer, good. just that simple.

Yes, I dabbled with it before becoming a Christian, what I realized was that it was nonsense, actually wasn't Wicca founded in the early 20th century?
 
You have to be careful with these names. White magic this and black magic that... All sorcery draws from the same power, and it doesn't matter if it's called white magic, green magic, or evil magic. It's all from demons.

Learning about these things itself isn't a sin. But if learning about them tempts you to partake in the actual witchcraft then you should most definitely stay away. And I think putting yourself into a place of temptation willingly might also be a sin.. Not sure though..

Anyway.. I think, if you're looking for supernatural healing or something, it shouldn't be from witchcraft. God can heal more potently without any strings attached. You just need the faith to get good results, so, if you're looking for super natural healing, grab hold of some faith and don't waste any time with those occult rituals.
 
On the thread topic, however, I'm a big fan of occult fictional stuff. I'm working through a couple of Final Fantasy titles as we speak! Tales of swords and sorcery are the most exciting in my book. Nonetheless, I reckon if the Bible says no to practising said magic, then it would probably be best to leave Harry Potter's wand in the old staircase...

hmm.. when i studied wicca wasn't yet a major player at the time. the straight satanism was the big thing, so i didn't learn a whole lot then about wicca. and i haven't put that effort into maintaining my knowledge. perhaps its time for a refresher.
but i know the teachings of wicca are ancient magic. maybe just the title is more modern, but the beliefs are nothing new.
