Hi everyone,

I’m trying to figure out the best routine for eye exams. I know the general recommendation is every one to two years, but I’m not sure if that applies to everyone. I’m in my mid-30s, wear glasses occasionally, and don’t have any major vision issues.

Are there specific signs that mean I should see an eye doctor sooner? Also, what differences exist between a basic vision test and a comprehensive eye exam?

I’d love to hear your experiences, advice, or tips on how to maintain healthy eyes over the long term.

Hi @lomarespio, welcome to the forum!

Great questions about maintaining the health of your eyes.

My eyes have been one of my biggest health challenges, so I choose to get them checked every year. A Google search should be able to give you the professional differences between a vision test and eye exam, but I'm guessing the vision test just tests how well you can see, but the eye exam will look at your actual eyes from the inside out. For example, the state of your corneas, buildup of fluids, or abnormal swelling of blood vessels that might be a problem.

How often do you go to the regular doctor, if at all? I ask because several things affecting your normal health will also affect your eyes. Over time, I had some things change in my overall health that now warrants me getting a full eye exam every year.

I'm not sure where you're located and it's probably different for different states, but right now I pay about $13 through a company called VSP for eye health insurance. I do pay extra at my eye exam because my doctor uses an advanced machine that more closely examines the inner workings of my eyes.

I personally think the 1-2 year guideline is good to follow because many people might see and feel fine, but develop things they're not detecting on their own (high blood pressure, high blood sugar, etc.) that will increase the risk of things like glaucoma.

Keep us posted on what you find and what you decide. 🤓

I would say once a year is best under normal circumstances.
But if you experience a sudden change in vision or experience a mild or more severe injury, I would see an eye doctor much sooner.
