So it's that homosexual month and despite my efforts to ignore it, one got into my facebook feed. It was a photo of what I'm guessing was intended as a wedding gag, it showed a woman in suit and a man in a wedding dress. Being a reactionary I posted a comment, noting a lot of complaints bringing up this verse. I also noted the complaints were virtually all directed towards the man, I mentioned women getting away with it for decades(at least in the general public), which got me into an argument.
“A woman shall not wear anything that pertains to a man, nor shall a man put on a woman's garment, for all who do so are an abomination to the Lord your God.
Now for some history, it was common pagan practice in forms of idol worship for men and women to crossdress and engage in sexual acts.(sounds like a gay pride event to me) Though the bible doesn't actually specify, this may have been part of the reason god gave this command. What we can gather from this verse though is that both parties are accountable so no free pass to one gender. Now we can extrapolate that it isn't talking about specific garments being off limits to one gender either, from what we can gather men and women dressed very similarly back then just as they do today. The difference would have been how they were styled and adorned. So one can assume this is talking about actual crossdressing, that is, the act of trying to appear as the opposite gender.
So in todays context pants for women are fine, and there's nothing fundamentally wrong with men's skirts. It's about overall appearance and intentions, we know it when we see it. God didn't intend for society to switch gender roles, or allow one gender to be given a pass either.
