Anyone used NORD VPN?

Everyone I know, me too, uses a proxy to go online. It's just safer. I use free ones now but wonder if anyone has experience with subscription VPN's like NORD?

I'm usually on my phone. Is there a way to set a proxy on my home PC settings or phone? I'm not tech savvy.

Advice is appreciated, thanks.

Online security is a big topic. I'd avoid free proxy or VPN services as selling your information is their business model. VPN is encrypted and proxy servers generally are not. For a non-tech savvy person the best would be for a tech savvy friend to set up a router based VPN for you once, then all your current/future devices get VPN protected automatically without any configuration. NordVPN is ranked highly in the link I just gave.

So I can pick one of those router VPN's in the list and it will work for my home PC and phone from that router at home?

Yes if VPN is done in the home's router then your home PC and phone, smart TV... get the protection automatically. When you change to a new phone later, it's already protected. Nothing extra to do. Upfront cost and setup difficulty are the cons.

Using a public wifi hotspot (like at McDonalds) safely would require VPN software on your phone. I just don't do things like online banking on public wifi.

That being said VPN is no magic bullet. Most people get compromised by falling for phishing scams. If an email that legitimately looks like it's from your bank, paypal etc says "Oh no there a problem, click here to login and fix it". If you click on it and give the imposter access, the VPN won't help.

The only reason you need a proxy to go online is to hide your IP address. That’s it.

Hackers have given vpns a bad reputation like video pirates have given bit torrents a bad reputation. But there are multiple valid reasons for both, reasons that don't involve scurrilous activities.

Unfortunately I have never personally had any of those reasons, so I don't have any advice for this particular matter. I run systems from flash drive installs, so security is something I never have to worry about. If I do get hacked, I'll just clone from another flash drive.

Forget about history and speak on the merits of the technology itself.

Let’s say my IP address is 192.168.1.67.
Now, i VPN to your house and my IP address is 10.10.34.89.

Why would I want to change my IP address? Maybe because I don’t trust the privacy handling of sites.
‘Now let’s say the site found my real IP address. Then what? Nothing really besides getting some spam (if they’re good at what they’re doing).

What say you? :D

This has nothing to do with any illegal or legal stuff at this point. Just the technology itself.

Hmmm ‘scratch disc“ is not exactly a technical term So it depends and more details are needed.
‘But sometimes photoshop complains about “scratch disks” so I dunno, it depends on more details.

Sure you can use it like that. You can also use a hammer to hit somebody in the head and kill him. Does that invalidate its use for building a house?

So then re-look at my second point. VPN is for offense not defense. You agree?

Yes, it is a storage issue which prevents me from performing any task in PS :cry::censored: Very annoying :unsure::giggle:

I have deleted much from my external 1TB HD drive, but C drive is pretty full and I don't think
I can do anything about that. I had the whole HD replaced back in July, and this was a new
machine (from my daughter last Christmas), so I am not impressed with Dell at all :p

I do not agree. A minority of users use it for offense. The majority use it for defense.

Are you determined to hate on VPN users? I feel like I'm talking to a Linux Fanboy who would rather take a hammer to his computer than admit anything Microsoft does can be useful.

How does vpn help you on defense? Give me one example. Just one.

‘Hmm this could be a tough one but run a disk cleanup in admin mode in windows.
‘Then clear shadow Points before running the cleanup.
Then go to run and type %temp% then select all and delete everything in that directory. Skip any files that won’t be deleted.

That helped!!! For now at least ;):giggle: Just a regular C drive disk cleanup... Thank you so much! :):D:)

Ugh, I spoke too soon :LOL: I still cannot even as much as open an existing photoshop document :cry:

It did let me save the one I am working on, though...

If I close the one I can open the other :rolleyes:

That's easy. Defense against any script kiddy who might have accidentally got his hands on something that was actually effective.

If I didn't know how to install a system, I would probably be using one myself. For normal people it is imperative that their system not get messed up by any random troublemaker.
