Hey Everyone!

My morning fare often consists of something leftover that includes mushrooms -- pizza with mushrooms, a veggie omelet with mushrooms, veggie stir fry with mushrooms. As much as I diligently try to cover the dish every time, I can count on it like clockwork -- the mushrooms promptly will explode with several thunderous POPS!, and I'm going to be wiping mushroom entrails somewhere out of the vast corners of the microwave.

I've had this happen even when I've tried to completely wrap thing over with paper towels and tuck the edges under, but to no avail. And so, accepting this as just my mushroom-loving fate, I now keep a wet towel (and a step ladder) ready any time I microwave something.

What kinds of mishaps do you almost always encounter in your usual routines or when you attempt to do certain things?

-- My vitamin pills come in one of those dreaded bottles with the "child safety caps" (which I understand are a great precaution for kids, but not so great for some of us actually trying to get them open.) Nearly every time, I either try to open the bottle too aggressively, or only lightly twist the cap back on without activating the child lock -- so the next time I try to open it either way, I wind up losing my struggle with the cap and spilling pills all over the floor or counter.

I put the pills into 2-week's worth of dispensers, but every time I refill them, I laugh to myself over having to arm-wrestle the bottle again (and usually losing.)

-- I like to dispense some lotions and creams into smaller jars that are easier to store on the counter and use for travel. However, I've found that many times, the liquid nature of the product gets into the threads of the jar and lid, "melting" into an almost glue-like seal that makes it nearly impossible to open. I've used all kinds of jar-opening aids, but sometimes the jars are too small to get a good grip, or the seal is just too tight. Sometimes soaking it in hot water will work, but sometimes I've resorted to breaking the lid, because I didn't want to waste the product.

Now I use bottles with removable tops that flip open, so I have 2 methods of getting to the product -- I can either flip the top open, or take it completely off. The bottles aren't quite as easy to pack as the jars (to me, at least,) but I like having backup access just in case!

How about you?

* What are some things you can almost count on being a mess or disaster, nearly every time?

* Have you just had to accept these things, or have you found a better way?

I tried to open this great big giant glass jar of pickles once. Almost broke my wrist trying to get the lid off. Took this humongous pair of pliers to twist the lid off. Ended up breaking the whole jar, pickles and juice everywhere. Never did get the lid off. Went with the much smaller jars from then on. Freaking mess for sure. This was after a hard day of work. Quite a mess to clean up. Took a whole roll of paper towels just to soak up the juice. Swept and vacuumed for an hour to get the glass off the floor and table. Pickles went in the trash.

I think this has probably happened to all of us, even if it's not with pickles!

I just hope you weren't hurt or cut by any shards of glass!!

Here's another one I've noticed for myself:

* When I'm repotting a plant or doing anything that even remotely has to do with gardening soil, I'm going to wind up with a space that looks like a kid taking the 1st place trophy at the World's Biggest Mud Pie-Making Contest. :cautious:

Since I don't have a yard or "real" outdoor space, I have resorted to trying to limit all my activities to my bathtub, so that I can hopefully just hose down anything involved -- including myself!

After many years of using a microwave, I rarely make a microwave mess anymore. I cover almost everything with plastic wrap before microwaving so the only time I get a mess is when food missiles rip through the plastic wrap, which definitely happens on occasion.

I do a lot of cooking, but have a hard time standing in front of the stove top so I'll often go to my office and check the interweb while something is coming to a boil. Inevitably that something will sometimes boil over, making a big mess for me to clean up.

I have issues with the nerves in my arms and hands so sometimes I will drop things. Knowing this I tend to be extra aware while carrying something that would make a big mess if I were to drop it. I still make that mess on occasion... not much I can do about that.

Most mornings I eat breakfast at McDonalds. When I eat at home it's usually 2 eggs over easy with sourdough toast. Even though I've been flipping eggs for decades, sometimes some of the egg will still slop over the edge of the pan during the flip. That's rare mind you, but I'm still guilty of that transgression.

I bought a cooks apron because one grease spot on shirt or pants tend to ruin that item of clothing. Of course, I rarely wear the apron and continue to ruin my clothes while cooking. It's especially sad when it is a new clothing item.

Enough about me, what about you?

All these microwave stories reminded me of a time years ago when I was defrosting a frozen banana in the microwave and it caught fire. It wasn't a huge fire, but I don't know how or why it happened.

I have many, many aprons but like @Tall_Timbers I also fail to wear them when cooking.

When I make rice it tends to boil over. I follow the instructions, let it come to a boil, turn down to low and put the lid on. But without fail the lid starts rattling and shaking and bubbles and foam start emerging spilling over the sides of the pot and leaving a big starchy mess on the stove top.

Maybe your microwave was just having a craving for Bananas Flambe! :p
