    Ok, so to your last point what if someone repents but doesn't believe in Jesus. I'm assuming the gospel and Jesus are one in the same?

    Yea, Jesus is the Word of God.

    In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made (John 1:1-3).

    When you repent you are showing Jesus that you trust Him. He is faithful to forgive us (John 1:9). This shows you have faith. You believe that Jesus will ‘cleanse us from all unrighteousness’ (John 1:9).
