Hey Everyone,

As singles, especially for those who are live alone, there is the luxury of not always washing the dishes as often as we might have to if we had families.

I was thinking about this today as I was tempted to reuse a bowl from last night (normally I like to have all the dishes washed, but I was tired yesterday,) but then remembered I'd used it for something with melted cheese. That's my general rule -- if something has been used on a "dry" food product (for instance, only has leftover crumbs,) I MIGHT use it, but if has something that was used for most anything else, like liquid or dairy, I'll just get another and wash both.

Now I know it's not that hard to wash a dish. But I think we've all had those moments where wanted to "cut corner."

Now on the other hand, I was staying with a friend's family and was horrified to find out that one family member could go for WEEKS reusing their coffee cup without washing it. While I was there, I did my best to make sure drinking utensils were washed on a regular basis!

How about YOU?

* How likely are YOU to reuse a "slightly used" eating accessory -- and what makes you finally break down and wash it?

* Have you or someone you know ever gotten sick from going too long without washing an dish, cup, or utensil?

Married friends are invited to answer too, as I wonder how many marrieds do this as well as singles.

I'm going to try to post a poll -- you can choose multiple answers and they'll be publicly visible, just for fun. Since the number of poll choices are limited, I can't cover every answer, so I'm hoping people will come back here and share their thoughts in the thread!!

After this...

I just might have a few dishes to do. :giggle:

I have what I think are reasonable rules for myself, dictated by an ick factor.

If I used a knife to slice an avocado in the morning, and I did not lick it off, I would use the same knife to slice an avocado in the evening. Not the next day though. If I put a sandwich on a plate and only the bread touched the plate, I would use that plate again. If the ham or cheese or something touched the plate, nope.

As for washing the dishes, whenever I feel like it. Could be three nights in a row. Might not be until next week. Depends on what's in the sink and how I feel about it.

"Spork!! I have an answer outside this list and will tell you in the thread."

This must be the year of the spork. It keeps showing up around me. In Sunday school they have a running joke about one lady and her spork.

Me? umm..dishes get washed in my household and put away...flies landing on and pooing on dishes etc are what makes me do it.

Don't think so, but my toothbrush cup needs to be washed properly and I have been guilty of that. My teeth aren't the best probably due to this, as I forget to sterilise after every rinse. I have to get better at doing this, its been my bad habit. I'm sure there are people that never use a cup/glass with their toothbrush. I'm realising actually that I don't know how to properly brush my teeth.
And making dentists richer.

Same here. I only have to meet my standards. I'll reuse a crumb plate. Or sometimes I quite wash off a crumb plate after I use it.

Coffee mug or tea mug, use it probably only twice, or for one day. Also glass too if it is not milk I drank from it.
Plate for my bread too I can leave from the evening to my breakfast time.

Cheese slicer, that thing, I do not know how "often" I wash it... It just is pain to use it clean, it does not glide on cheese after it has been washed.
Butter knife and tomato/cucumber knife, once a day (now that I have a dishwasher) if I happen use them. I have a small bowl for cheese slicer and knifes next to the bread.

Oh no, I most likely should have ticked the first box too.. 🫣😅 if I think about few years ago (quite many years ago actually) in a cottage, we ate from a same plates for a few days :censored:o_O I am still alive, and we never got sick.. but I do not do that anymore.

On a trip where I visited a sister of mine, I was taking dishes out of the dishwasher because I presumed they were clean. After I got sick I learned that she puts her dirty dishes in the dishwasher until it fills up, then and only then does she run the dishwasher. Learned my lesson. We've never used our dishwasher so don't know what the customs are with regards to that contraption.

I normally use clean dishes but we do reuse a fry pan and a butter knife for a day or three before washing it.

That's me at my job, at home with my wife, all dishes are to be clean.

Much love!

The coffee cups I use in the house get washed once per week. I have one in the car and one at work that get rinsed out daily.

My dishes get washed after breakfast and dinner (Yes, I wash the dishes!).

Several years back (mid 80s), I was having dinner with the girl I was hanging out with at the time. I looked down at one of the forks, and I noticed dried up chocolate cake stuck between the tines on one of the forks. I knew it had been a few days since cake was in the house. So, I grabbed a clean one and ate my dinner. That moment forever changed me. I can still remember that dirty fork. I scrub my dishes and I check them thoroughly to make sure they are clean. 😁

I have bad eyesight and sure must have missed a few here and there. But I make sure I pre-rinse and post-rinse all dishes now, to stop this from happening.

We don't have a dishwasher in my household - it's all done by hand. I use both a brush and a dishcloth. The dishcloth gets hung out to air dry and it is also rinsed post dishes.

Dishwashing liquid is always Sunlight.

Lots of people just eat with their hands, and don't even wash them beforehand.
Mcdonalds anyone? Or KFC which is meant to be finger lickin' good.

I don't think I've ever licked my fingers (or someone elses..ew) after eating KFC. I wash them afterward.

One other thing, chopsticks are way easier to clean than forks.
And cleavers also, as they have a wide blade, as opposed to those piddly european knives.

i wash dishes every time immediately after any meal. my dad always taught me to complete work 1st, & enjoy fun later. still abide by that. my immune system is very strong when we were kids my twin & i & older brother slept in the same room, for years. they caught mumps, chicken pox & measles while i only got measles. in addition to that, since 1996, i only had covid & that was for 5 days. i used white tea, lots of oranges & honey. before 1996, seldom did i catch colds. you are quite a lady, soulsearch, very phunnneee with your postings!!!!

Thanks very much, Karlon!

I always hope that at least some people will find the threads I put up as being fun, interesting, or a little crazy.

It sounds like you have an immune system of steel, and we wish we could pass some of that around! :D

Crazy for sure Seoulsearch - you are crazier than me. I could never have the courage to start these kinds of threads, complete with polls.

My options for threads is - you either interested, or you are not. No polls, you can think what you like, even if I don't like it. Also, I'm not thinking of hitting on anyone who answers my threads. That would be the ol' bait and switch, wouldn't it?
