How does God correct me when I've made a mistake?and how do I know that he is the one correcting me?
First, you will have "knowing" in your conscience. It will simply say, "wrong". If you miss that, which is easy enough to do, God will speak through His word. That means that we have to know His word reasonably well.

If conscience and God's word are not enough, God will speak through the brethren. You can know if it is from God if it matches your problem and is confirmed by God's word. If none of those are effective, God will speak through circumstances. You will lose all peace. You may find unexpected problems that God will use to get your attention.

I've had quite a few experiences that were no fun at all. That includes 6 months of hardly any sleep because I was bent on my own will, not God's. This the word God gave me that I ignored:

Isaiah 50:11

Behold, all you who kindle a fire, who array yourselves with firebrands, walk in the light of your fire and of the firebrands you have lit! This is what you will receive from My hand: You will lie down in a place of torment.

No one has to go through such an ordeal. It's so much better to agree with God in the first place.

How does God correct me when I've made a mistake?and how do I know that he is the one correcting me?

We realize God is correcting us when we feel guilty for something wrong we have done. Guilt is like a warning light in a car,
and until we gain the wisdom to welcome God’s reproof or guilt trips, we will not feel the satisfaction of becoming a new and improved version of ourselves (Heb. 10:19-22). Thus, guilt is good (John 9:41). Woe to those who become so callous that no guilt is felt when wrong is done (Matt. 13:14-15)!

How does God correct me when I've made a mistake?and how do I know that he is the one correcting me?
for all that are born again Christians, its the Holy Spirit speaking to us. His communication is undeniable. He will warn us by convicting us if we are in the wrong.

2Co 13:5 Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?

Lam 3:40 Let us search and try our ways, and turn again to the LORD.

Rom 2:14 For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves:
Rom 2:15 Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another.

If you confessed Christ and repented of your sins then you should have the knowledge of good and evil and God wants us to do good and shun the evil.

We should be able to correct ourselves.

And God will not twist our arm to comply for that is our choice.

The Bible says a Spirit led life will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh for they have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

But we still have to make that choice we do not want sin in sincerity before the Spirit will lead us.

If it is ultimately our choice to not want to sin whether led of the Spirit or not and God will not twist our arm to comply then we have to correct ourself.

We had to correct ourself when we first repented of our sins and confessed Christ.

How much more is the responsibility to correct ourself now.

The Spirit will help us not to sin but we have to correct ourself before that can happen.

Every time we repent we are correcting ourself.

And God already explained how He wants us to behave which is to be Christlike.

So we have the knowledge to know what we have to correct.

God is not going to help us if we refuse to correct ourself for it begins with us.

Jer 26:3 If so be they will hearken, and turn every man from his evil way, that I may repent me of the evil, which I purpose to do unto them because of the evil of their doings.

Also when people say when they sin it is a mistake it is not true.

A mistake is when you did not do it on purpose.

But if you sinned you did it on purpose so it is not a mistake.

How does God correct me when I've made a mistake?and how do I know that he is the one correcting me?

Hi Faithy, if you are wanting to know how to recognize God's correction, I would say it's usually very specific. Like, a certain event or action will weigh on your heart and mind, and maybe you will feel prompted to do a specific thing to make things right.

If "correction" comes from a source other than The Holy Spirit, it's often more general in nature and leaves you feeling confused how to move forward. Perhaps you will have a general feeling that you're not good enough but just randomly guessing how to improve. That kind of "correction" is actually condemnation, and it can come from the devil, our own hearts, or other people.

God's correction can sting a bit, but it always has a clear path forward that leads is closer to Him. Condemnation that is not from God leaves us wandering in the weeds wondering where to go.

James 3:17 NKJV — But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy.

Asking Jesus to fill you with The Holy Spirit usually makes His correction more obvious, too 🙏
