Revelation 3 verse 8; Luke 13 verse 24 ~ Behold, I have placed before you an open door, which no one can shut. Make every effort to enter through the narrow door. For many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able.

Matthew 7 verse 13 plus Romans 8 verse 13 ~ Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. For if you live according to the flesh, you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live

I’m new here and this is the first thread I’ve tried posting. Is this senseless derailment a normal thing around here?
Welcome to CC, ChrisG33 ... gotta have some discernment here ... there are some hidden gems in some of the "senseless derailment".

some of what is posted is quite hurtful and shouldn't be submitted ... but some of it is quite enlightening if you can get past the tone ...

I honestly believe that because of the anonymity of a web-based forum, some feel free to just spew written dysentery ... these things ought not so to be ...

always good to follow what's written in 1Thessalonians 5:21 Prove all things; hold fast that which is good ... whatever does not pass the test, let it go ...

unfortunately yes lol

people often have their own agendas which have nothing to do with what we are trying to talk about..

perhaps we can sort out what ((if anything - but if we are careful enough in out examination, probably something)) the derailment has to do with the topic?

another fruitful strategy is to just ignore the derailing and go on as though it isn't happening / didn't happen.

My question is: why did Peter even feel the need to cast lots in Acts 1? I know that was still before Pentecost but Peter literally just prophesied and interpreted psalms of David! He was clearly in the Spirit when he did that! So why cast lots?
my guess is that while waiting, as they were told to do, what happened with Judas and whether there was supposed to be 11 or 13 apostles was a hot topic, and no one had any clear direction from the Spirit. so they did what was a known, proven thing, to try the discern what God wanted them to do about it.

Pentecost itself didn't answer that topic. as far as the record that we have in the Bible, it wasn't until Paul was called ((much later)) that something that really spoke to those questions came about.

maybe they ought to have been patient?
it's really a different question than whether casting lots is legitimate - - but like you said, absolutely nothing in the Bible says it isn't.

Because that was the normal thing to do in Israel from the beginning. The last 7 tribes that hadn't already received their inheritance in the land received their allotment by the casting of lots.

And Joshua cast lots for them in Shiloh before the LORD: and there Joshua divided the land unto the children of Israel according to their divisions. Joshua 18:10

Too normal, but I am beginning a systematic study of the doctrine of prayer on the Hermeneutics thread
for all who are interested in discussing that topic sensibly.
